Yes you can, you can take a small bag about 35cm by 40cm filled with pretty much anything you want.....except liquids if you are going to the USA.

Not sure if you can now but i do know they stopped you carrying the glasses with the case...........not sure now but if you go on Gatwicks website you will be able to find just what you can carry....ok
