Over the last couple of years, I've developed quite a racist attitude toward Americans and I can't really put my finger on why? I never used to feel this way, can anyone suggest why this feeling has built up inside of me?

It is just the Americans as a nationality, rather than being racist toward a skin colour....

Ellie, take people as you find them. I hate their Administration, and that hatred sometimes manifests itself into my view of ordinary American people, wrong of course!

About the fencing lesson?

It might have something to do with the arrogance of our current administration or maybe you have had some bad encounters with Americans, I know I have (happens every time I read this forum and see some of the stupid answers and ignorant rants).

Regardless the logic behind prejudice is flawed, and simply an easy way for you to categorize people into good or bad. I think it's a hang-over from cave man times when different could kill you.

It's like I explained to my brother when he said something about black people. I told him "In the early 1900s in NYC there were Irish street gangs who would club people to death for their shoes - was this becuase they were Irsh?" - A more logical reason would be that because they, as a group, were treated badly, they responded badly. It's a sociological thing, not an origin thing.

I would suggest you look for logical reasons like this instead of grouping people together to dislike. It's a sign of small-mindedness. We are made up of the rest of the world and it's population, races religions etc (e.g. there are more muslims here than jews), so when you get down to it - does it make sense to hate the whole group?

I do not think that it is appropriate to feel that way. In each country there is good and bad people. The problem with USA that the world expect a lot from it being the world leader in power, technology and democracy. When there is problem like human right issue, the response is more serious comparing when another country does the same. I have to say I used to love USA before, it was an example to follow. The main problem now, that USA is run by some business men and oil dealer who do not care about their own people or about what people think of them so long as the oil price goes up and their bank account goes up.

If you watch TV Channels 1 to 5, and/or have come through the school/university system in recent years, you will have been indoctrinated by the "right on lefty/liberal" types who run these organisations. Anti Americanism is part of their 'raison d'etre in life. Yahoo answers is full of young people pouring scorn at the US, so you are certainly not alone, but at least you are starting to question it. I find it quite scary how easily people can be manipulated into following the dogma promulgated by those stated above. Once it takes hold, it becomes like a rallying cry , particularly for younger people who, even if they quietly disagree, find it difficult to speak up against the crowed. The Iraqi war seems to have given them an opportunity to endlessly lambast the US. I have got tired of listening to it, at least they take action unlike that pathetic talking shop known as the UN.

It would be stupid in the extreme to alienate the US, who are idealogically closer to us than Europe have ever been, or are likely to be.

Have you ever visited the US?

I have been to America many times, my wife is American. I find the people of the US to be amoung the friendliest and most warm hearted people I've met, and i've been all around the world. I live in England now and find the English by far to be the most irritating self righteous for no reason nation in the world. The have no patriotism or love for their nation, unless they are playing in the world cup, then the flags all come down as soon as they are dumped out. Unless you have been to America and spent some time there then you cant really have an opinion except what the media feeds you.

As an American, I have no idea why you and so many like you would hate us. Sure, we've made plenty of mistakes, nobody's doubting that. But look at all the good we've done as well. It sounds like you're being bought into the internationally held stereotype of Americans (i.e. loud, brash, obnoxious, greedy, vulgar, decadent), but if you actually take the time and visit our country you will be pleasantly surprised that we, as a whole are nothing of the sort. In my work, I interact with people from different countries all the time, and I could just as easily buy into the stereotypes that are held up against other people. I could say that the British people as a whole are pale and ugly, snobbish, uptight and lousy in bed. I could say that Germans are ornerier than hell and sadistic. I could say that Eastern Europeans have way too many moles on their bodies, etc. etc. (Get the point?). But we all know that these images are nothing but stereotypes. I could easily say that you hate Americans because you're jealous, but I won't because I don't believe that's true. I think you have been misled by what other people and the media have portrayed Americans to be. Just be proud of who you are, and accept other people for who and what they are, regardless of the country they live in.

P.S. Just to let you know, it's my dream to visit the English moors someday, I think they're beautiful ;o)

*muah!* from an American.

Prejudice is probably better. It may be because of the war and the image they have been portraying through their so called leaders. These leaders were voted in via the "majority" (not everyone in the States are US citizens and/or vote) and "represent" the people. So, I believe you are "against" them as a generality as they live a certain way of life based on the way their country is run,

You question says a lot about you and how your personal opinion but also that you are not going to judge an individual by where they are from and there's nothing wrong with that.

You can't be racist toward Americans. American isn't a race. It's a nationality.

You can be prejudiced against Americans. But that just puts you in the same league with radical Muslims. Are you sure you want to be that way? The US Government has done something you disagree with. Is that a good reason to hate ALL Americans? I'm sure your government has done something you disagree with. Would that make you hate yourself?

Do not allow yourself to become upset with people places things or circumstances. They are powerless. Your reaction is their only power.

Do you mean prejudiced against Americans? America is a multi-racial (multi-ethnic) country. Therefore, one cannot have a racial prejudice against all Americans. Being American is a nationality and not a race. Further, racism has two directions just as any form of prejudice does. One can be "for" or "against" another group. Thus, a person can have racist attitudes in favor of a racial group or racist attitudes against a racial group. For example, one can be a racist in terms of one's own group by believing that one belongs to God's chosen people and that one's genetic-cohort group is better than everyone else's group. On the other hand, racism against a specific genetically-related people means that in one's view that group is less entitled to the same rights and respect as one claims for oneself.

You will need to explain your own situation much more fully before your question can be answered.

Possible because they have caused so much trouble with their forigen policy over the last 50 years or so...
Much the British Empire was hated in SOME of the Colonies ,
America as a political entity , as a state (and now us unfortunalty) have pissed all over the UN's laws, and now that they have undermined it, and gone against its laws, they have the cheek to say.. oh the UN doesnt work anyway...
Funny that , tras a kids bike and then go,, oh it doesnt work anyway.. great logic..(mind you the UN still may try to bring charges to Bush, and Blair after they are out of power!! )

I reccommend to EVERYONE a book called Lawless world by Philippe Sands QC (QC= Queens Council , a barrister appointed as counsel to the British crown) to see what America (AS A STATE) think of the rest of the wolrd... what it comes down to is they have declared that they rule the wolrd, their is one rule for them and another for evryone else.. and behind the scenes they bully all governments around the wolrd (including ours) and they basically do not play ball , at all, it is very sad and sick.....
They belive they have the right to do ANYHTING to ANYONE to defend their way of life.. and they believ that ANYONE that gets in their way is part fothe problem..
And of course they have the population of America (I do not mean all of you Americans of course !!) sewed up , in that they know that they have a critical mass which they can sway with Patriotism, and religion, and the rest they do not need to worry about.. they have had the Media sewn up since Nixon,
it is a sad sad thing... even 30 years ago the people where not so controlled, after the sixties the Republicans and what turned into the Neo cons where worried about the reaction of most of the clever people inthe sixties, and they invested in think tanks to change the way the smart people think.. and the less educated ones they just use the media on...

Also read about Leo Strauss, and see what his philosophy was, and who he taught it too, ie who his student where, and what they do now... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Strauss
thats an eye opener...

America has interfered with Global politics since the WW2 , with it containment policy , and now its pre emptive , and not just pre emptive, but WAY WAY WAY pre emptive...

BUT YOU KNOW I AM SURE REALLY SURE THAT A LOT OF AMERICANS ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH....
IN EVERY COUNRTY THERE IS A PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE THAT WOULD UPSET YOU, AMERICA JUST HAS A LARGE POPULATION OF THEM !! BUT LOADS ARE GOOD !!
LOADS DISAGREE WITH THE POLICY's ,
THE FACT IS IS THAT THE REPUBLCIANS FIGHT CLEVERER AND DIRTIER THAN THE DEMOCRATS , they use all of the media tricks going...and the dirty election tricks, and then when they get in they SCREW things up, and know they will be baqck at the reigns making their rich buddies rich again in 8 or 12 years time when the pendulm swings.....
They are the biggest threat to the US , (and the World) is sitting right there in Washington DC, and they (the american people)cant do a thing about it... cos they are the biggest Gangstas on the globe..

I just re edited my answer because I have just read what some of the yanks have written, listen guys sorry but we are not brainwashed by "liberal media" we just have got a dam clue what we are talking about... take a look see why you are so PATRIOTIC , look at Leo Strauss, and what he did, and see why A LOT OF YOU ARE THE BRAINWASHED ONES !! did you ever think about that.. it is people like you , that make people think badly about the states.... try INTELLIGENT DEBATE AND DO NOT ASSUME YOU ARE SUPERIOR!!! some of us actually read policy, and read serious works about the global situation AND ACTUALLY THESE PAINT A MUCH NASTIER PICTURE OF THE STATES THAN ANYTHING I HAVE SEEN INTHE MEDIA, AND MUCH OF IT IS WRITTEN BY AMERICANS) wake up and smell the dam coffee !!!
And what os so bad about being liberal , and sensible ? rather taht than hot headed and irrational.. how Conservitive shall we be??? how about like in Saudi?

Have you had bad experiences with Americans? Do you feel that more of them have treated you badly than with kindness? Or are you referring to the image America inadvertently projects? Please remember that not "all Americans" are the same, which is true of any nationality. There are good, and there are bad, and it helps to not generalize. Also, remember that a shout is remembered longer than a whisper. There are good people all over this world, but most of us whisper words of kindness. Good deeds are pushed to the end of the news program or omitted completely, and full attention is given to the sensationalized, scandalous or "newsworthy," which make the american image seem somewhat bloated and lazy. But if you look on a smaller level, you'll see that good deeds are done daily.
