when you watch a fictional tv programe and a telephone number is mentioned have you noticed it always starts with 555 do you know why?

That's because 555- ____ is a phone number that hasn't been used in any part of the world. If they used a phone number that someone already has, and someone called it, there could be legal issues

Try calling ((212) 555-1212, it's a real number. 555 is used to ward off people who will call a number they have seen or heard, ask anyone in the country who has the number 867-5309

I've heard that its because it is illegal for real phone numbers to be shown or mentioned. There is no real phone numbers that begin with 555.

because nobody has a phone number that starts with 555. if someone did and people called it there would be problems, probably lawsuit.

It's because people actually think they will reach the charater/star if they call the number. 555 is a dead prefix. It's to protect everyday people and businesses.
