This little helecopter seems to be pretty small. There is a cool picture of how small it is on the link I've provided.

Experimental: MIT designed the Dragonfly, a little insect like (of course, duh) very maneurevable with newly created miniature servos and its power source were a set a watch batteries like, thought they did not mention them.

Home made: Easily you can make a miniature prop plane made from tooth picks as the frame and wing frame and tail surfaces. A rubber band as the power source for the prop. (you just twist the prop, thus, twisting the rubber band) the thinner the rubber band the better if its a very small model.
With that as a start you can go crazy and improve upon it.
Prop is made anything from pastic pieces and heated (for shaping) with a hairdryer to buying pre-made props at hobbyshops.

They make them in a particle accelerator: quarks and the like. You van't even see them with an optical microscope :). And they fly faster then any jet!
