the chart was voted for by people who therefore must have liked the album they voted on
1: Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles
2: Thriller - Michael Jackson
3: The Joshua Tree - U2 (above)
4: Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
5: Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
6: Revolver - The Beatles
7: Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon and Garfunkel
8: Abbey Road - The Beatles
9: A Night At The Opera - Queen
10: The Beatles - The Beatles
the 2 albums you mentioned wouldn't have been picked as they didn't reach number one in the UK. so Bat out of hell or dark side of the moon weren't on list either
think the Beatles are well liked as they have 4songs in top 10

The greatest record ever would have to be either Pink Floyds dark side or Led Zepplin IV, but thats only because its too hard to find all the old Bob Marley records in their original form, in cd form though there is a compilation called ''songs of freedom'', and it has to be the greatest collection anyone can own.
Nirvana unplugged is high up there too
I'm american and I acknowledge that the British contribution to Rock music is as important as that of the early american Blues masters like Robert Johnson, no they're not crazy (john mayall, eric clapton, zepplin, pink floyd, beatles, rolling stones, stone roses... the list of great british music goes on and on)

I would have voted for the Beatles any day before Nirvana or Alice in Chains. That's just trash music.

Nirvana and Alice in Chains are (or were) pretty good bands. But don´t even try to compare them with The Beatles.

Nevermind? Please, its just Kurt Cobain whinging, how is that a class album? Sgt Pepper changed the British Music scene, of course we're going to pick it over some American rubbish

sgt. pepper was a groundbreaking album...that's why they chose it...but there have been a lot of groundbreaking albums such as Nevermind which led to the rise of grunge...Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is still the best "headphone" album of all time...KISS Alive is a groundbreaking Live album even though it was doctored in the studio...Black Sabbath's self titled debut gave us the birth of metal...Supertramp's Even in the Quietest Moments is also a groundbreaking album and is one of the "best produced albums" of all times as quoted by many industry"experts"...However, I do not agree with the BBC, and my favourite album of all time is probably Physical Graffitti by Led Zeppelin or Highway to Hell by AC/DC...cheers

To me it would be a tossup between Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road. And I'm 100% American, not a Brit.

I think it's all about taste...and yours is bad!! Only kidding but I think your question shows how diverse music can be and that whatever style of music is written, someone will like it.
