Why do kids just seem to want more and more expensive thing

Pick your reason... their parents, their friends, the media.
A lot of kids these days just don't understand the value of a dollar. They are bought every little thing without having to work for it. Survery 100 parents today... I think you'd be suprised at how many children don't have to do chores, keep up on their school work or behave but are still given anything they whine loud enough for.
Children today see commercial after commercial that try to make them think that to be popular/happy/cool they just have to eat this cereal or ride this bike or play this video game. There are few parents who watch television with their children or monitor what the children watch. They aren't around to teach them that there are ways to be happy other than having the fastest, the latest, the most expensive.
"Things" encourage, "things" praise, "things" will make children happy. Because there just aren't enough hours in the day, because there are higher priorities or because they just don't see it as important or feel like it, parents who should be encouraging their kids, praising their kids or spending time making sure their kids are genuinely happy are just, simply, not.
They see Timmy down the street with the latest toy and feel they need to have it too. They see kids who seem the same as other kids being the ones who are popular, who have the "crowd" to hang out with and who see to have the most friends. Children today seem not to be encouraged to be their own person. But if they have more and more and more, then maybe they can be just like everyone else and by doing that be happy.
Hubby, the teacher, says: To often I see parents buying goodies for their kids to either shut them up or entertain their kids while the adults live their own lives. Kids today don't value what they have to work for (basic household chores) because they don't have to work for it. People mistake short attention spans for boredom with their kids toys so they buy more and the kids get overwhelmed with what they get. It's not peer pressure but parents / grandparents / others that go wild with spending their money on the younger kids without restraint. Perhaps it's the syndrome "I didn't have it, but they will".

Because their parents do not know how to say NO. Or they are too lazy to have the confrontation that the NO word might cause. Or because they do not love the kids enough to teach them about the wonderful free things in life, or maybe the parents don't know about the wonderful free things because they are too busy shopping for new DVDs that they don't even have time to watch last week's DVDs on their sixty-inch projection TV with home theater system surround sound which sits right next to the beer cooler. Let's bribe the kids to shut up so we can get stoned in peace.

I think it is just a reflection of society as a whole. Kids are at the forefront of todays materialistic world. Back when I was a kid myself and my Friends all wanted the latest toy.
Now I am in my 30's the latest toy is that much more advertised and rammed down kids throats that wanting is no longer enough. To keep up with their Friends they need the latest toy.

Children are just as materialistic today as yesterday. The only difference is there are more stuff to buy. Kids want more and more expensive stuff because they are kids and need limits set by their parents.

Kids learn what they are taught. It's repeat. Parents don' take a stand and don't show a good example of how kids don't need everything and money sense. It's getting worse each generation. If parents don't know how to handle money, then the child won't know how ot handle money because they gott everything they wanted in their childhood.

well, thats normal if they behave like this. if a friend of their's buy some expensive stuff, they'll want to buy a more expensive and better one just to show off. they also think that parents will be able to afford all the things thay ask for

Because we continue to provide children with items, and then they watch TV, hang out with friends, see older people wearing nicer clothing or mom and dad using a cellular phone and of course, they want to be just like them. Childrens minds have not changed in the way they think, but society, economics, and the way in which you parent your children have...

I think that to many parents associate THINGS with love. They think that by giving their kids everything they want that they will be showing them how much they love them. I think this teaches kids bad work ethics and they aren't ever going to want to work for anything, they will think that things are owed to them. Parents need to learn how to say no and stop raising little brats that think they are entitled to everything.

Pressure from advertising.
Marketting based on targetting social leaders which start severe peer pressure which can involve bulling, ostracising or even violence to those who dont conform.,
Ie no friend, no parties, picked on and hit for having the wrong trainers.
The media all geered up to generating theis pressure to get at the disposible teen market...
Kids dont stand a chance... thats capitalisim and the american way for you

Parents for allowing it;
Advertising;
The children think they're freaks if they don't have the most expensive pair of trainers.
No I truly think you cannot blame the children. It us parents and we should cut the material according to the cloth.
