I've read this book and I enjoyed it a lot. I think it's a great book for school reading. You will learn something about empathy (understanding) for people less fortunate than yourself. It's also a peek into a possible future for our world, one that wouldn't be that good, but that can maybe be changed by our actions in the world and with our fellow men.

Plus...it's an easy read with a young main character that you can probably relate to.

Yes, Octavia Butler is an excellent author. This book is one of her most recent so more contemporary than her SF books. It should appeal to students. Though it is a bit dark and depressing these are conditions in many parts of the world today. Unfortunately most countries in turmoil do not have isolated sanctuaries.

If you like this book, try Clay's Ark, Wild Seed and the 3 books that follow.
