They are both great, aren't they? Which one do you like the most?

They ARE both great, but I prefer the Johnny Cash version. The subject matter pertains to drug use and losing all you have. Johnny Cash lived that story at one time and it just seems more poignant coming from an old man who's been there and come back. Also, the fact that it was one of his last great hits makes it more meaningful.

Johnny Cash

Lets face it, Johnny Cash is the man, BUT, he's sounds old and winded on that last album he released. Hurt was the best cover he did on that album because it fit his style well.

NIN's is the original, and i don't know too many remakes that are better than the original. The video for NIN's is better than the one Johnny Cash did too. The Cash video was made so naive kids who can't get enough MTV can be familiarized with the Man in Black. It was all marketing directly related to gaining a broader audience to see his biopic.

I guess most of the people here don't really know NIN and they automatically say Johnny Cash because he's a legend and died already. Also, Hurt was his swansong, which makes it even more special.

I vote for NIN, of course. Johnny Cash changed the melody a bit and so took away a "sting" from the song. It doesn't HURT as much so.

Are you kidding me? I can't believe 20 people have answered this question and everyone said Johnny Cash. Apparently none of you have seen NIN perform it live or you'd be singing a different tune. Besides, Reznor wrote it. No cover song will ever be better than the original...with the exception of Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower.

Johnny Cash by a long stretch, he turned the song into something more meaningful than just a selfish ego trip.
