Dorms are too small to begin with and you would like to take it to class I assume?

No you can do without. Usually colleges have tons of computer labs some that open 24/7. You'll have most programs available for free and you can print on campus.

Just bring whatever you're using right now and put it in your dorm. Most ppl take notes by hand in college anyway - for some courses using a laptop would slow you down considerably (math/economics).

Yes, you do. Make sure it has plenty of memory, Microsoft office package and the rest just depends on what classes you are taking.
