Well, as this is in the London forum, I'll only talk about London even though your question states "England". We loved it (30-something married couple, no children, USA)! It was our absolute favorite trip two years ago. The train to Paris was great, but I was a bit put off by Paris in general. I think w/ only a day, we didn't get to experience all it had to offer. We'll be back (after I learn a bit of French!).
But back to London, it was our first trip there and I'll admit we did EVERY touristy thing imaginable, but loved every minute of it. It is beautiful, clean and there is so much to do. Walked the entire time rather than taking the tube so we could experience the neighborhoods and lesser known statues, monuments and parks. St. Paul's should not be missed (couldn't make it all the way to the top, that last set of steps is like scaffolding and scared the #$($ out of me). Buckingham Palace tour was pricey and dull IMHO. And changing of the guard...good luck seeing it. We were so put off we started walking down 'The Mall' and found where the horses and guards start their journey to the palace...much better view and photo ops and I didn't miss seeing the actual changing. Tower of London/Crown Jewels were nice, not spectacular. The London Eye was also a pretty good time and made for nice photos. Cabinet War Rooms...wellll the hubby is huge into history so he loved, I was ready to take a nap. But the National Gallery...I could have spent the entire day there, maybe two. And it's FREE. We did so much more in seven days but I'm afraid to bore you too much.
My only disappointment, even though I was warned in advance, was that the food was not good, not good at all. I'm sure there is good food to be found, but we certainly didn't find it. Wagamama was the only thing I remember liking, but I didn't go to London to eat so who cares. Please don't take any offense if you're from London. We were tourists and didn't know the right places to go. I'm sure there is some very good food.
Ohhh, and what's that huge department store...Harrod's? I don't know when a good time to go there would be but I'll tell you when it ain't...Saturday afternoon!!! My bad and I should have known better. The food section looked amazing, but I couldn't really get close enough to see much.
We will go back to London but next time will incorporate other towns in Southern Europe. I hear that is also very beautiful.
So I guess my answer to your question is...yes, certainly go there on vacation. Keep in mind it is a pricey place to visit.

you have to choose the correct time to go, if you like rainy days, snow, or sun, i really like it because you can feel inside a movie, people is really nice and pubs are always full of people, you can find your grandma there!!, if you have friends living there you can save lots of money because hotels are the most expensive, well, as you know Uk pound is one of the most expensive currency, so u have to save money. I have been there 3 times and i love it!! people, places, culture, beers, train. If you have the chance of visiting do it!! and dont forget to visit the palace and see the change of guard and take a horror tour where they show you jack the ripper streets and places where ghost had been seeing, also go to the teathre and enter all the pubs you can, you will find everyone are different and also the beer taste diferent in each place.

I was there in the early 90's. I loved it! We stayed in a bed breakfast and took the tubes everywhere. We went to the theater, to the Tower of London, Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abby, and then we took a midnight train to Edinburgh we spent the day @ Holyrood palace and Edinburgh Castle and the night @ Borthwick Castle. The history is wonderful! I would highly recommend a trip to London!

yes i have been i am American but lived in the UK for 4 1/2 years.
recommend the south of England, Cornwall or South Hampton. I also recommend Cotswold's- Burton-on-the-Water that is western England. Northwestern England like Blackpool is nice, Lake District is also pretty, of course London is SO nice but SO expensive. I would if I were you it is well worth the Travel. Plus you will have priceless memories.

As a matter of fact, I lived in London for 3years and I love that place.
So many places to go and so many different people from different culture.
And the british people are very nice,They can be snobbish time to time.
but they are very intelligent and sophisticated. Nice to have a conversation with them over a pint!
and you could go to paris by train .It only takes 3hours to get there (Euro train goes under the ocean!!)
You are gona so !!fallen in love with englnad that you wouldn't want to leave.

Do it. You will have the time of your life.
And if you enjoy real ale and fish and chips, you'll have enough nutrients to see you through any town or locale and check out their wonderful museums. You'll end up wanting to go there again. And Ireland and Scotland are also winners, so include them if you can.
Just do it. It's great. One of the best travel adventures of my life...
