I totally agree with you because of one reason-the children!
I don't think it's fair for an innocent child to have two mommies or two daddies! The child won't grow up as a normal one.And I won't even start with what's going to happen to that kid at school.
I think couples who have problems with having kids should be given the chance of the IVF treatment, and not "couples" who are trying to prove something to the society....

We all know that being overweight isn't healthy BUT not all people are overweight because they over eat. It is easier for the IVF treatment to work if not to large some people have been turned down for being a size 14. Its strange that viagra is easier to obtain even if your 70 than IVF for unhappy couples that only have a short time to conceive.
Its sad that single parents get such a lot of help (rightly so) but conventional married couples are discriminated against

I think the life choice of lesbians is fine but they should perhaps pay for treatment and be considered perhaps in some cases.

Hey Jackie,
In general, i would say that the answer to your question is no.
BIG women and lesbians should have as much right to fertility treatment on the NHS as anyone, i mean we all pay into the NHS, so why should we not be able to benefit from it?
In the case of seriously obese women, there are often health complications that have arisen as a result of their excessive weight that make natural conception very difficult or impossible. Illnesses such as Polycystic ovary disease are quite common in larger women for example. One suggestion i would possibly make in determining their suitability for IVF would be to have the NHS 'brains' devise some kind of chart or scale which would exclude only those for whom IVF is most likely to fail if they remain at their current weight, or those for whom pregnancy could cause a real risk to their health by putting further strain on an already struggling body. Although i am aware that restrictions such as these could be construed as the government trying to punish people for being fat. Really, fat women should be strongly encouraged to lose weight before embarking on a course of IVF. A healthier mummy should make for a healthier pregnancy and hopefully a healthy tot when it's all said and done!

For some of the other answerers to this other question, homosexuality is not a choice. Lesbians are who they, because that's who they are. So what if they love someone of the same sex, it doesnt mean that they automatically forego their maternal instincts, or their right to be a parent. If we're gonna start banning people from having kids because they can't provide a home with a Mummy and a Daddy, then perhaps we should consider all those single mums out there, surely their kids should be taken from them and put into care or foster homes, because they're not providing the 'right' environment for their kids to grow in!

Rather rude question...however, if you must know "tubbies" can't usually get IVF. The docs want the patients to be in optimum health before they even suggest IVF. I have known quite a few people to go that route and they ALL had to go on diets to lose at least 10 pounds first.

Lesbians, I don't know....I haven't ever been exposed to that situation personally.

Of course they should, everybody has the right to have children regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or appearance. Its a sad state of affairs when the bloody government starts telling us if we can bare children or not, 1984 here we come.
A quick note for all those ignorant (and obviously homophobic) people out ther , homosexuality is not a lifestyle choice, grow a brain, why would someone deliberately choose to be ridiculed, harassed and generally treated like a sub human by close minded bigots that think its a choice.

Overweight women are encouraged to loose weight to improve the chances of IVF working. Lesbians can have treatment, but need to pay for it themselves. I would also mention that most lesbians wouldn't consider themselves "a bit confused". For the sake of other answerer's- IVF is a treatment to allow infertile women to become pregnant. The question doesn't support banning fat lesbians from having treatment, but it asks WHY they are banned, the questioner seems to support government funded IVF for all.

While I have sympathy with obese woman who are desperate to have a child I would go with medical advice if it said there could be dangers, or was unlikely to succeed. As regards single women and lesbians being given this chance I would say certainly not. Having a child is so special that you would want everything for that child. These categories only seem to want everything for themselves. It's pure selfishness to deliberately bring a child into this world in the knowledge they will never be able to know a father. I'd say if you can't conceive naturally it was meant to be that way. Live with it.

well, perhaps you should have worded you question differently as it does come off a bit insulting. doctors usually do recommend to women to be in optimum health prior to trying to get pregnant. and I'm a lesbian and not at all confused (just insulted). while I am physically unable to have children (as I've had a hysterectomy), I know plenty of lesbians who've conceived through artificial insemination. and those children are happy and well-adjusted without a "father figure."
and if a woman is a good candidate for this procedure, they should not be denied.

didnt see anything wrong with this question.
Freedom is a good thing when used by responsible people.
The government should not decide who and who can not breed...Though I wish they could.
As much as I would like to keep really ignorant people, or really bad people from procreating (not to say fatties and lesbo's are bad people), it would be wrong and I would never support it.
But then comes the question which is more wrong? A child born to a prostitute and forced to live a life of poverty and prostitution, or the government telling you you can not have children because you are a prostitute, or were one.

It is bad enough the govt decides who you can and can not marry.

In the matter of lesbians getting it free then no. They make a life choice that has nothing to do with any illness so why should the tax payer pay for their IVF treatment.

With "tubbies" as you so quaintly put it there are some good arguments that a lot of them have problems with their ovaries that not only make then less likely to conceive naturally but also make them put on weight so there should be a lot of lee-way in that area.
