I know the obvious ones - behaviour, academic expectations, trying to create a good comfort level for ALL kids. What are the issues that you like to address on the first day.

As a 1st grade teacher, two things come to light.

1st--I really stress personal responsibility--that you CHOOSE to do things, and that there are consequences for your actions. I stress that it is their turn to be a 1st grader and that they need to do what is necessary to get smarter.

2nd--that they should do their best everyday. I don't expect perfection, and I stress to the children that as long as they are trying, that is the most important thing. Also, I stress that learning must be a bit difficult or they aren't learning anything. If it is easy, they already know it.

Those are important when working with 6 year olds.

I like to stress the fact that one's education is the only thing a person has that can't be taken away from them (and in turn that you should get as much out of it as you can). I also remind my students that we'll be together for 180 days, which kind of makes us a family. Families get frustrated with one another, but in the end, we stick up for each other no matter what. I teach 3rd graders, so I like to drill in loyalty, friendship, and personal responsibility as soon as I can.

Let them know that you are more than a teacher u would also like to be thier friend and u are thier if they need help(regardless if it school work, family problems, peer problems). Let them know that u believe they are going to do a great job. Each student is just important as the next even if they are having trouble.

the ones you mentioned are good
i used to give my new students a survey asking them what they expected [this current grade/school year]
what problems they think might be for them
and them spend a couple days discussing the
results of survey...[ let the students talk about the subjects that came up....

I'd let them know that it's their decision to do well. If they wanna be lazy and not satisfactorily complete the work in the assigned time frame, it is only their fault. I as a teacher wouldn't give any hand outs or curves.
