We are celebrating my daughter's 6th b-day at the local skating rink. Would it be inappropriate to ask the guests to pay for their own skating fee $5.00/child or is this taboo ? (We of course will provide lunch, cake/ice crm and a goodie bag).

How would you feel if your child was invited to a party and asked to pay for his/her own skating fee? I'm trying to be cost-effective as we live on one income. Thanks for your input!

That sounds like fun, but I do think it would be inappropriate.

Is it possible to have a few guests over to your house and they play games for fun, make something together, do a craft, Bake cookies for their families.

I think the library would have some good children's games for a house party like this.

A walk/picnic at the park where there are paths to follow or equipment to play on. You could play some games designed for larger areas then. Play "I spy something"...with you giving the clues and them guessing....or taking turns guessing. Collect leaves and press them between wax paper.

Also maybe you could take a picture of the whole gang and have reprints made to share with them when the thank you's are sent out.

I hope you can figure out something else...one that will fit easily into your budget with wonderful memories and no regrets.
Children enjoy time spent together in many ways. Sometimes keeping it simple is the best. I'd like to see you enjoy the day also...and not be stressed.

Maybe save up over the year for a skating party next year or another year....or go skating with some family members who understand your situation.

Have fun and "Happy Birthday" to your special daughter.

Unless you included in the invitation the fact that in lieu of a present they would pay their own $5 fee. I know that you are probably trying to give your child the most fun by having the event at a skating rink instead of your home, so if you can go the extra mile and pay the $5 I would.

It's not taboo. The only problem with it is that some parents may not let their children attend due to their own income circumstances. I wouldn't expect to have my child go to a skating party and not have to pay for the skating fee.

Yes it is inappropriate. If they are your guests, they are your guests.
