I have had the Mirena IUD in me for the past four years. First of all, I want to say, in regards to Krystal C's answer:
It is not like having a Pap Smear. And no, the wires that hang down into your vagina will not poke your partner.
Everyone is different. I was in immense pain when I had mine inserted. I've never had a child though. I also had bad cramps for about three days afterwords.
It's definitely worth the pain and the slight side effects though. You can't feel it, you can't feel the strings inside of you, and it's just as effective as having your tubes tied.
I would recommend an IUD to anyone that's in a monogamous relationship!

You may feel some discomfort when the device is implanted but you should not feel real pain. If for any reason you do, speak up. Removal should not cause any pain or discomfort. If you have any other questions about IUDs that come up, contact your OB/Gyn. This is your best source of information.

It does hurt a bit while inserting and removing. I had it for 5 years and for the little pain I felt then it was worth it for those 5 years... and then remember your body will react differently. If there is any discomfort for an extended period of time thats not normal You need to go back to the doctor.

It does hurt to have it put in, cant comment on having it taken out as mine is still in. but I definitely think the slight pain for a few days is worth it, ive had mine in for a year and i no longer have a period at all and you dont have to worry about taking a pill or going to get a shot, i really like it.

I had mine bumped off final twelve months and that i myself ought to no longer experience something while my healthcare expert pulled it out. the clarification that it could each and every so often experience slightly uncomfortable while they positioned it in is by the fact they control your cervix to open it up. while they do away with it they do no longer try this. It fairly does remember on the guy nonetheless, i did no longer think of it harm to have put in, i presumed hard artwork grow to be greater painful. So it is all the type you look after soreness. desire this helps, stable luck=)

My friend recently got one. It is basically the same process as having a PAP. Only they insert something in it. If you get one, be careful if you have sex because the wire might poke him. My friend had to have hers trimmed because of this problem. She also had random blood spotting/even blood flow and serious cramps for over a month. I personally think it is gross. It's like you turn into a cu.m dumpster or something!? Eww.

For me the most unpleasant part was when they used a clamp to hold my cervix still for insertion. The removal was actually not too bad - a sharp twinge & it was done.

It was uncomfortable to have it inserted, but it was a breeze when I had it taken out.
