You know what I have a computer, a college education and am on welfare. NO I AM NOT ASHAMED> i am a single mom left by the man who made the kids and they are denyed care by him, he should be ashamed.
By the way, one day I'll be your nurse better think real hard before you open your mouth cause I may have to load that needle pretty good for you okay jack ***.
Would I be a better mother if I worked at walmart as a slave and let my kids sstarve and have nothing? Do I not deserve a college education?
Did I chose to be poor"? that's so ignorant. noone choses to be poor.
So now I am proud of the fact I am strong enough and loved enough to seek help for my family and my children and that I am smart enough to know who the real trash is.
AHEM U

I've never been on welfare but, as a child, I lived in "geared to income" housing. We had just immigrated and my parents didn't know that such housing was a welfare ghetto, they just wanted to work hard and save for a home.

I lived for 5 years on a street where my parents were the only ones who worked and accepted no social assistance. I saw a degree of personal lack of responsibility but for the most part, the people who lived on my street were there because of a life situation. As I go from house to house in my mind, I could tell you stories of mental illness, serious debilitating physical illness, generational poverty where lack of parenting and support sets children up to have so little self worth that they don't understand they can be educated or productive.

Your assumptions are very narrow minded if you believe that most people on welfare have a lack of personal responsibility. Many of the families on our street were single moms who had at one time been married but were left without any help. Many of those women did not have any skills which would make them employable in any kind of job that would have covered even a fraction of their expenses.

I think of my best friend, left in the same situation with 2 children who didn't go on welfare. She had been raised with self worth, she had supportive family and friends and she had an education. Most of the women I knew on welfare had none of those things.

If you're so blessed that you can't imagine a set of circumstances that would see you go on welfare, you're a very lucky person :) I'd encourage you to take a little time now to volunteer at your food bank or homeless shelter so you can become familiar with the real face of poverty and welfare. It will change your life in the best of ways.

No I never felt ashamed. I was on Medicaid when I found out that I was pregnant with my first 13 years ago. I never collected food stamps or $$$, but I couldn't get insurance for myself and care of my baby. I was offered the stamps and W.I.C. after she was born, but I never accepted it. I could afford the food but I couldn't afford the $1000's and $1000's that it costs to have a child. When I had my 6 week check up done, I called my county and dropped the insurance.

I don't like the people who can get jobs but don't want to and sit around and collect. But I don't have a problem with people who can't get insurance or can't make ends meet for other LEGITIMATE reasons and collect it. That is what we pay taxes for. I needed it once and I was glad that it was there, but, like I said, when I didn't need it, I dropped it.

I've never been on welfare, but I doubt I would be ashamed if things were that rough and I needed temporary assistance.

I would, however, be ashamed if I were a bitter elitist.

What should they be ashamed of. They are working through their problems and most will head back in employment, I suppose that you never needed a helping hand of any kind. Repuglicans are so greedy that is who should be ashamed

I pray to God that you will never have to find out what it's like. Be careful what you say cause I am a believer in karma and jinxing yourself. Don't be judgemental if you have never been in those kinda shoes. You may end up there someday yourself..
