Running for an hour burns up more calories than walking for an hour. You can realize the same benefit from walking for longer periods of time. Walking is also a lot easier on your joints and especially your knees.
Jumping rope is an excellent way to help tone muscles.

Running is the worst thing for joints over a long period of time, it's especially hard on knees, and a lot of runners develop arthritis early. Now, if you're a casual runner, that's fine, as long as you have excellent running shoes, and running on a treadmill is better than the hard pavement. The BEST thing, as with most things in life, is VARIETY. Try running one day, speed walking two days later, and if you want a really great cardio work out , add swimming if you have access to a pool. It's by far the best, cardio workout, excellent for toning ALL muscles, and no impact to hurt joints, etc.

Both these are good enough to burn calories. Start it of by walking fast or slowly for 1 or 2 months and then start running or jogging. Yes of course jump roping does do good for your muscles tone as well eric.

Running on a treadmill is a high-impact exercise, which puts significant stress on your joints. You will certainly burn more calories and reduce weight faster, but you may damage the cartilgage in your knees in the process. Running with good running shoes on a soft track is far better for you.
