I've noticed on this site that a some posters cringe when a question comes up related to sexual orientation research. Why is that? (I don't always agree with the research, but I do like to hear about what the researchers have to say.)

because many would have to admit something about themselves that they don't really want to admit.

I don't think it is non-straights who fear this, but those who are straight and insist that gay people choose their orientation. They are the only ones who seem to have a problem with this research. Imagine their chagrin when they have to admit they were wrong - and I fully believe this will happen. The research that has been done so far hugely leans to innate sexual orientation. Those who are gay already know the answer to this research subject and have nothing to fear at all.

Let's say we find out it's genetic. Don't you think that since homophobia is still part of this society, most LGBT people don't share their minority status with their parents, and abortion is legal, a good deal of the next generation might get snuffed out before they even get to *breathe*?

Also, the very idea of explaining why people are gay or bi treats us as if we are diseased, and the disease requires explanation, pity, and/or treatment.

Sometimes the methodology is truly awful, or the researchers have homophobic motivations.

Sometimes the research can be twisted and used against us.

And finally, our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are in the Declaration of Independence, not the laboratory!

I have never seen people on this site cringe at legitimate research.

I've seen people cringe at "research" done with skewed samples by discredited psychologists that has tons of methodolgical flaws and is obviously not based in reality.

The ONLY time I cringe is when the research is flawed, studies are so obviously one sided and when those conducting said research are known to have questionable motives.

Science can be a whore to money, such that whoever pays the bills gets the results they want...

Not in all cases (OBVIOUSLY!!!) - but if the extracts aren't from a reputable Journal, then chances are it was produced to serve some extreme point of view or at very least misinform the masses who are not specialised enough in a given field (or sometimes intelligent enough) to understand the invalidity of conclusions drawn.

Orientation may well be a decision, and could no longer be a decision. i do no longer recognize. What i recognize is that appearing on impulses is a decision. we are all born with sinful desires, and we are all in charge for controlling ourselves. Being born sinful isn't any excuse to stay in sin. i for my section do no longer care if homosexuals are born that way or no longer. Liars are born that way. grasping human beings are born that way. selfish human beings are born that way. offended human beings are born with that tendency......that does no longer excuse mendacity, stealing, loss of generosity or the different immoral habit. there are various immoral issues that technically "do no longer harm every person." it truly is unusual how gay intercourse acts are the only ones that get exonerated on the grounds of the tendency being inborn.

They fear what they "think is true" will be deemed false. Most of these people have been raised to believe that homosexuals are "bad". So when science proves that we are "ok" and "normal" it shatters their belief system...and that means that other things in their life could also be false. When someone has based their whole life on a set of ideas that they believe to be absolute fact and truth are told that they were wrong, it changes everything for them.

Most fear what they don't know and they definitely fear change.

they just want to be considered in a higher moral societal circle that the rest of us. research will continue to prove that queer is genetic therefore no one's better. it's like the antithesis of capitalism: the need for a few super rich then some rich, a large middle class, and the masses are poor ,really consumes some people. they just have to feel like they're better. but are they?

they just fear being hit on by the same gender.Proven straight people get more aids and stds than homosexuals.at least the statistics etc say so.they like to believe homosexuality is a choice but it's not. it's who we are and we're not given a choice.
