Both are common.
Some women lose the mucus plug in bits and pieces during the last few weeks of pregnancy. It keeps on regenerating, so it is possible to "lose your plug" several times.
Some women don't notice any significant "mucus plug" coming out prior to labor, though most women do have an increase in vaginal disharge during late pregnancy.
Some women get "bloody show" during early labor which is due to tiny blood vessels on the surface of the cervix rupturing during dilation.
Some women don't have anything at all come out until the baby comes out, but this is pretty rare. It is especially rare during a hospital birth as most obstetricians routinely break the water bag during labor to "speed things up" so they can get back to doing other things...
Personally, I have had my "mucus plug" start coming out several days before I gave birth (second pregnancy) and I have also had "bloody show" during labor several times. I have also had labors where nothing came out until my water broke (after several hours of labor), and the baby was crowning a minute later.

when I lost my mucus plug there became no blood. The docter stated not all are bloody. And that you'll loose your mucus plug and in no way bypass exertions. when you're leaking extra then commonly used then this is an illustration of your water breaking i'd flow get inspect purely to be particular. in case you commence having close contractions be particular to flow right now away. %. your bags, and robust success. Congrats

I have had 3 kids. With the first, I lost the plug at home during contractions; with both others, I lost it during labor, so either way is normal.
Tracy92 is talking about water breaking which is DIFFERENT than mucous plug/bloody show.

Both are possible but its also true that you can lose your mucous plug piece by piece prior to labor or leading up to it. Its different for everyone so just keep an eye on any vaginal discharge for signs of it.

I only heard of maybe 2 out of 60 woman say they lost their plug first. Usually you go to the hospital with contractions & hours later your water breaks. I wouldn't let it worry you. If you do lose the plug your water doesn't just come crashing down automatically. There have been cases where the water has broken ahead of time. But that's rarely.

yes they loose ther plug and then it can take a while to actually go into labor. I was at 3cin when i lost the plug, then two weeks passed before I had my last child. I have had three babies. And After I lost the plug it took one week, three days, and two weeks before I had my children. If you want labor to progress try looking into blue or black cohas pills, fish oil, or castor oil, I used evening primrose oil and thats how i went with the last one. I didnt care for the black cohash. And I have hered that it is dangerous to take.Good luck and God Bless. O and walking alot and bumpy car rides helpd me to.

Most women lose it before labor, but not all. It is dislodged when cervical changes begin to take place. Most women have effacement and some degree of dilation before labor begins. With one of my children, I lost my mucus plug four weeks before I was due. I did not deliver until several days past my due date!

Both - each woman is different
The more you are dialated & effaced before your labor starts, the better chance you have of losing your plug before labor.
