actually it takes some space, like 4 GB from 80GB like that, but 10 GB is not normal,so do one thing scan the hard disk try "surface scan".bad clusters may also cause these problems some times.how ever if u want format the hard disk, better to use "fdisk" it is the best one.

HI . If u wanna delete all ur stored content then u have to Format all ur drives . To do this select the drive, then right click on ur mouse select Format .Then go for Quick Format. U could Format all the drivecontent except the C drive. If u want to delete all the content of this then the only way is reinstalling the Operating Sysytem of ur com of any version of Windows. There u can reset all the partitions & format all ur drives.

You need to format the hard drive. This will wipe everything completely clean. Insert the Windows xp disc and follow instructions for a new installation of windows. When it asks you where to install it it will give you a list of volumes and you will choose to delete the existing volume. This will cause the hard drive to be formatted. You will get a message saying that all data will be erased, which is what you want. Then follow the rest of the instructions to finish installing windows xp.

usually what i do is re-install windows with the "format" option during the set up. this wipes everything off your hard drive and puts a fresh copy of windows on there for the user that will buy your laptop.
so just make sure you format during the windows install.
there are other ways to do this using a boot disk and then just wiping everything on your hard drive using the format DOS command, but this is the easiest way.

If you still have the operating system distribution CD, run the setup program again. It will have an option to erase the hard disk. Click on the link below for a detail procedure of how to use the Windows XP setup program to format your hard drive...

your operating system and important files will take up some space. also, usually it will only show a smaller number than it really is. for instance, my computer shows 37.2 GB but I know it is a 40 GB hard drive. either way, that is a lot of space. so dont obsess over it.
