If so what did you like about it? Also what do you think was the message that Claude Brown was trying to send about American life?

I loved this book. I read it in the 90's so it was dated to a certain extent.

Felt is was good because his expereinces lent insight to the complexity of African American who grow up and live in the urban enviornment. The mixing of religous philosphy, music, social and governmental pressures, lingereing racial issues both inside and outside of the community.

If you really read it and analyze it, you can see how the foundations of hip hop culture were laid out and why certain aspects of the culture became prevelent and necessary, i.e. street parties, tagging, the 5% Nation, everything.

Read it back in the 70's. I don't remember it much but it had to do with social inequality for black people that even though civil rights laws were passed, they were not being honored.
