If it's a hidden biological contaminant an ultra-violet light will help you find the hidden odor. Try the link below or go to Petsmart and pick one up.
After you find the odor use "Simple Solution Stain and Odor Remover". It is also available at Petsmart. But works for a LOT more than just animal smells.
For as little as $3.99 you can put this enzyme/detergent formula to work for you. I just locate the spot with my trusty U-V light and then pour a bit on. I pour enough for it to soak through and get the padding too, nothing more frustrating than getting the smell out of the carpet, but leaving it in the padding.
Good luck!

It is probably mold or mildew. Try cleaning the carpet with a steam cleaner. And buy the carpet cleaner that get rid of mold and mildew. Not only will it get rid of the smell but it smells really good.

This is really gross, but it could be a dead rodent behind the wall. If that is it, then time is the only way that you can get rid of the smell. I would call an exterminator in the future to make sure that you don't get any more, if that is it. If that is not, then make sure that you clean the carpets, walls and base boards well and see if that doesn't make it go away.

Mildew? Do you have pets? They love to go in the corner. Or a recent spill? Is there a window nearby? Could be standing water in the sill that smells.

It could be mold or mildew in ur wall, ur staircase, or even up under ur carpet....if so then just cleaning ur carpet won't get rid of the stinky smell.

Mold/Mildew don't smell "sweaty", they reek, but don't smell sweaty
Try getting "DampRid". It might just be musty. If it is musty, then it could lead into mold or mildew, but you don't want to give more of a chance for them to grow.

Do you have pets? Does this area get damp? Could be mildew or the start of mildew.
