It's a big furniture store that sells stuff with a Swedish, modern look to it. They have them in Europe too. I was in one in Austria. People make fun of it because they are snobs. Ikea sells reasonably priced, mass-produced stuff that you need to put together yourself. So, it's not like Ethan Allens or getting antiques that would be considered super classy. Usually people buy from Ikea when they are first starting out. We still have our Ikea bedroom set and it's lasted 15 years so it's not bad quality. A lot of the furniture is made of pine.

Right on Ihni, couldn't have said it better myself, lol. I don't get it either. I quite like Ikea, at least they have a big range of products to choose from so I don't have to go to 20 different shops just to find a lounge suite. I have wooden Ikea chairs in my kitchen and they look pretty good. I've added some nice chair cushions so they aren't so bland looking. Bought them 5 years ago and they aren't falling apart. Their prices are also quite reasonable and if I can keep more money in my account then the better off I am at the end of the day. I also like some of their smaller items and honestly, who can go past those meatballs and pasta for $5 a plate? Where else can you find a place to shop for home wares and have a meal at the same time? The only thing that freaks me out about Ikea is their lack of exits. It would take a long time to get out if ever there was a fire, but you'd probably be killed in the stampede anyway on one of the narrow walkways. Then again, as long as I died in the kitchen section, I'd be happy.

Ikea is a Swedish, furniture store. It has everything. It even has a food court! They sell modern furniture, so probably nothing you'll find in the states! The reason why people make fun of it is because they have good prices but you must make it yourself.

I have an ikea like 15 minutes from my house (live in Germany) and I must tell you, its not the average furniture store, its 10x better.

The only Ikea I know is a national store that sells pretty much everything for great prices. I'm not sure why anyone would make fun of it?

Its an affordable furniture store thats huge.
Its made fun of because the furniture tends to be low end, not exactly heirloom furniture, it falls apart in a few years but its great if you're living on a budget.

People make fun of it because the (semi-)swedish names of the furniture sounds so silly sometimes. It's usually more of an affectionate chuckle though. =)
