Money laundering is illegal, but check washing is just very inconvenient for you. The advice to check with your bank is sound, but even better would be to bring the check to a branch of the bank on which it was written, if that is possible for you. They are the ones with the final authority whether or not to cash it and they have more discretion in making that decision than an intermediary bank accepting it as a deposit would.

A check is a legal document. Everything on it has to be legible. *the name and address of the account holder
*the date
*to whom the check is written
*the dollar amount in short form,
*the dollar amount in long form (what the bank goes by),
*the signature of the account holder
*and if it looks as if something is written in the memo section, that must be visible too
*routing and account number at bottom
*check number at top
*watermarks

If you have been with your bank for a long time, they may cash it for you; otherwise, contact the person who wrote you the check.

The dollar amount, who signed it, the name of the bank, and the numbers on the bottom of the check. Most checks are fed through a machine. And the machine needs to be able to read the data on the check. Your bank may be able to key in the data by hand.

It probably varies from bank to bank.. call your bank and ask them specifically. Different places use different reading devices. The routing/account numbers have to be legible, and may even need to be scannable.

If it is still legible at all, you might see if they will cash it, but if they won't, ask the check writer to stop and reissue it.

The bank will need to be able to read the account number and the amount, and to be able to see that it was signed and dated. Take the check to your bank and talk to someone there.
