When information was recorded has a direct effect on it's accuracy.

The most accurate recounting of an event comes shortly after the event, when people have calmed down emotionally and are able to look at the event with some rationality.

Recordings in the heat of the moment, or long afterward, are both suspect because the accuracy of the information is colored by emotion or by blurred memory. And recordings made generations later are mostly speculation, or based on oral renditions that often and easily get distorted in the retelling.
