First off, give up on some kind of instrument doing it for you. There is no "smell-o-meter" anywhere near as sensitive as the human nose.

If practical, try removing furnishings from the room to see if they are the source of the odor. If you're still getting it, turn any ventilation off (air conditioning, fans, etc.), then slowly and methodically walk around the perimeter of the room, sniffing as you go. Once you've done that, get on your hands and knees and do the same thing (starting obviously with the area of strongest smell).

Odds are that it's something in the carpet, or (unfortunate for you) something died in your wall. If it's died in the wall you'll have to decide whether to wait for the smell to go away (when the dead animal has finished rotting :-o ) or start ripping out drywall to find it.

Good luck!

The furnace helps to keep it dryer in the course of the wintry climate so that you received't word it as undesirable.

check for mold/ mildew, if there is none. Put some small lids filled with pure pine-o- pine in them. and put them up high. If you have mold, u must get rid of it. Also wash all curtains and stuff. And check carpet, could be wet underneath, remove it, replace it and clean floors, also open all windows.
