Are you asking in practical terms or philosophical? Either way science is about research and building on the work of others. So find teachers or professors who specialises in the area(s) you're most interested in and speak with them -- most will be happy to answer questions and offer suggestions.

Mostly you need to take classes. And classes. And more classes. Ask questions of everything you encounter. Learn to collect data points but reserve judgement. Read a lot of non-fiction and be adventurous in the subjects of the books you choose. (Libraries are excellent for this.) Appreciate how cool the world is.

matters what type you want to become.....
one type doesn't really make or think up anything themselves and follows everything the book (written by other people of course) says to the extreme point of just being a parrot basically and thus easily replacable.
one type is creative and even though he will base things off of other people's older work he will at some point break off and go off on his own somewhere..

first step might be to follow someone else's.
