I think the sax is great to take up. It's a wonderful horn to play plus it's awesome to utilitze your school this way otherwise you'd have to pay for lessons.

Another reason to learn music is because you will have an easier time understanding other things you are/will be learning.

As you grow older - you will have more appreciation for knowing how to play an instrument and how it increases your intelligence.

Any instrument is fun. Saxophone was my choice because they cross into so many venues. At the time I started plying I had no idea what a venue was or even what it meant, I guess I learned. It is a fun instrument. They all are. I like the Sax because it has such a range. The Saxophone is a woodwind. It has a Reed. Some woodwinds have 2 reeds. Oboe.
The Saxophone is very unique to American Music but has been used in all venues.
Allthough not many Classical Compositions have a Saxophone part many parts have been either added to or integrated in.
Jazz Sax is fun.
Best thing is have the Student try out instruments at the Music Store, Friends and finally the Music Teacher/Band Director.
If the student wants to play the saxophone, go for it. To deny a student is to deny learning. To deny learning is to promote ignorance.

No, for several reasons.

Saxophone is incredibly popular with kids. So you would be one of dozens of sax players in the band. That means less attention to your abilities and lessons, and more difficulty in making the higher level bands.
Saxophones are more expensive than other woodinds.

I would suggest flute or clarinet, or if you are really ambitious bassoon or oboe. Good oboe and bassoon players are hard to find, if you start learning now you can get a college scholarship for it.
If you are still positive you want to learn sax, try flute or clarinet first. The fingering systems are nearly identical to sax, and you could learn sax on your own very easily.

It is a very good instrument. However, she should probably start with a clarinet since its like a basic sax. Then after about 1/2 year to a year switch her to a sax.

I played in a high school marching band for four years and think it is a great experience..........

The instrument you choose depends on your coordination and style.......I think sax players are cool and the really good ones are so intouch with their emotions ......the sax can express emotion like few other instruments........because there are more buttons or valves than say a trumpet or brass instrument it requires patience and practice to get good....maybe more so than a brass instrument

If she likes it - why not? Studying music in general has a nice side affect of making kids better students overall. Parents also have a lot of fun getting involved (as a volunteer) with the school band. Encourage her and look forward to all those concerts.

I think if she plays any musical instrument, it will be great. She may not like to play the saxophone after she gives it a try. Let her experiment with different instruments/musical genres until she finds her niche.

Does she want to take sax? Is she interested in it? I'd go with her thoughts about it. Learning to play the sax in a school band is much more than learning to handle the instrument. It's teamwork, working together, cooperating, following directions and demonstrates how by working together with others you accomplish more than you can alone.

Funny.

My 10 year old (now 11, today's her birthday) is starting 6th grade and taking up the alto sax.

She's very excited about it.

Please keep me updated, and I'll try to do the same.
