All of the information I found online seems to be contradictory. This is common with most marijuana information. Physicians or Naturopaths can you give me some insight? I guess I'm looking for any personal experiences, did you or someone you know chronically use marijuana during pregnancy, what was the outcome? How are their kids now, ages, etc? Also if you have any links please list them.

One specific complication that I know if is a disease called Gastroschesis. Although not always, this disease has been linked to women who smoke marijuana while pregnant. What happens is that the umbilical cord does not fully form and the intestines and sometimes other organs form outside the baby's body. Most of these babies are born prematurely, and must have surgery to put the intestines back inside the baby's belly. There can and often are many other complications due to this- including bowel obstructions and breathing difficulties due to the organs pressing up against the lungs. Do some research on this if you want. I was born with this disease, although my mom wasn't smoking marijuana. Since my initial gastroschesis repair, I've had a bowel resection when i was 9 and have had other health issues that I will have to deal with my whole life. Although my case is fairly mild some have many surgeries, I know of a few who have to have sugery almost every year, and usually don't survive a very long life.

You are right about the contradictory info out there. When it comes to any kind of non medical drug during pregnancy, alcohol and cigarettes included, I believe that common sense is the most reliable issue. Remember that if you abuse of any of these drugs, it may affect your baby in several ways, but I know several mothers that smoked weed during pregnancy and their sons and daughters are entirely normal and healthy, but you have to keep in mind that you shouldn´t abuse it. One of my best friends, mother of three, never did stop smoking marijuana during pregnancy, but she did lower the quantity, she used to smoke only half a join once a week, and most of the time once a month. Same thing with cigarettes and alcohol, I know some friends that lowered the amount of cigarettes to one every month at the beginning, and then they completely stop, and alcohol as well, only a beer or a glass of wine once a month at the beginning and then stop. You should ask several doctors about marijuana during pregnancy anyway, specially your family doctor, you should know that not all pregnancies are the same, perhaps what was good for my friends is not as good as you might think to your own baby, and that is something to consider. As I said, common sense is your best guide.

Well, I have a friend that works for a hospital in Mobile, AL that said:

He found a weed baby that had 1 testicle, and a penis with a vagina on it (hermaphroditic), one arm grows out of its normal position while the other one lacks a collarbone AND grows out of its left chest and a birthmark that somewhat resembles a bong.

This child soon developed to be 5 years old, but has never grown more than 6 teeth, has a constant urge to smoke weed, but since its vocal tendencies has not developed, he smokes "wheat" with his 22 year-old wife/sister.

Its behavioral habits include withdrawal symptoms, the constant urge to have intercourse with close family members, and cannot sleep unless Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and/or Sublime is playing in the background, quests after reflective items during the day and known to have exhausted local liquor stores of their Twinkies supplies.

But then again, this baby is also the result of inbreeding between DaNephew Jaksen, male, 48 at time and Daughter Jaksen, 36, 1st degree cousins.

alright man screw all you guys who dont have experience CAUSE I DO! HA! i smoked high grade marijuana when i was pregnant every day...and i smoked cigarettes...he didnt weigh very much 5 lbs 13 oz but i blame that on the cigarettes cause it does say on the package "may cause low birth weight" so no marijuana does not hurt the baby and maybe if more people realised that it wont even hurt a child in the womb (UNLIKE OTHER DRUGS OR EVEN ALCOHOL!!!!!) then it would be legal. i just dont recomend going to the hospital in labor high cause they do test you for it in the hospital delivery room so id stop for at least a couple weeks. i stopped 17 days before i had my son(4 months now). and by the way he is the cutest most mellow baby youd everr see! and once again screw the critics i dong give a poo about u so there...and by the way it helped me keep food down in the first tree months i had the worst case of morning, no, more like all day sickness...made me feel better and eat more cause im not very big i weighed 115 before i was pregnant and topped out at 145 but now im at 120...still smokin...but NOT around the baby cause smoke IS bad for them and IM NOT STUPID :P

Without being judgemental, I suspect that it is not good for the baby. I think much information on marijuana is hype, but what people smoke today is not the same as what was smoked in the 60's. People (dealers) put additives and stuff in it to make a stronger "high." I've even heard of it being soaked in formaldyhyde. They even tell you to avoid caffeine, so I think it's probably a good idea to avoid the pot unless you have some serious medical condition that necessitates it for pain management, in which case you should ask your doctor. Good luck to you and your baby!

It was recommended to my ex-boyfriends ex-wife (I know that sounds funny) during pregnancy with their son. The son is now 5 and is a normal, healthy boy. It was recommended to her because she's 5'5'' and was carrying a 14lb baby, Tristan was a big boy when he was born. She was having alot of pain and the doctor said look, I can't give you a muscle relaxer, but I can recommend you smoke some grass to help the pain.

I have a friend whose wife used marijuana during pregnancy and they've had no problems at all. The delivery was normal and the baby was normal, too. This was 25 years ago, and the kid's grown up into a fine adult.

Only problem is he looks like Yoda.

Marijuana is a drug...plain and simple and as with most drugs I would counsel patients to abstain during pregnancy.

However, Marijuana smoke does contain CO, Arsnic, and THC, all of which modify blood/oxygen flow to the placenta. This can lead to low birth weight, birth defects and fetal distress.

THC can cross the placenta and has been detected in fetal blood.

Ultimately its a drug, just as any other drug. You don't need them, why subject yourself or your unborn child to the effects.

I had a friend who smoked occasionally and her kids turned out fine. The fact is, it's adding another variable to the list of things that could go wrong. Do you really want to take that chance? Can't you just wait 9 months to light up? ANY kind of smoking can inhibit lung development. Don't be selfish...give your baby every healthy opportunity it deserves.
