Until the past year, people who had sufficient disposable income to buy large luxury cars and SUVs did so. People without the bucks bought econo cars. The people you see may be driving economy cars because they're not well off and this is all they can afford. The smoking rate is higher among people with lower incomes. So you may have a valid observation there but your conclusion is wrong and the drivers aren't being inconsistent.

Also, the fact that the people in small cars are smoking may be more apparent because they may have their a/c off to save precious fuel, and therefore are flicking ashes out the window in an obvious way. This would skew your observation even more toward your conclusion. Still, this is not a matter of consistency.

Let's suppose a wealth Prius owner smokes. So? Maybe he just can't quit, but he can pollute a little less by driving a Prius. Don't you sometimes skip the cheeseburger to avoid weight gain, but treat yourself once in a while to a bag of pork rinds? I know I do, and it proves nothing about me or any group to which I might belong.

The same goes for cyclists and people on the bus or train too, doesn't it? Of course, if they make a conscious choice to be environmentally friendly in one way, they should be consequent. They should never fart again, they should be vegetarians, live in a wooden shed, work on the land to cultivate their own food, and most of all they should stay away from sane people.

I wonder why conservatives (like yourself?) do not have to be that consequent, and yet are taken seriously. I think you should all shoot ducks on the weekend, drive a truck or an SUV the size of three elephants, spend money like there's no tomorrow, plunder every poorhouse you come across, kill and burn old people to save the pensions, burn books and libraries, shut off the internet, and of course lend a helping hand in exporting as many Jews, gays and blacks as you could possibly find. Why don't yóu practise what you preach?

Smoking produces a LOT less smoke than cars ever have. The ratio of cigarette smoke to car pollution is incredibly small. As far as the environment is concerned (and not personal well-being), cigarette smoke is pretty insignificant.

wow is that a generalization! actually, if you want to get scientific about it, cigarette smoke does not pollute the overall atmosphere, just your personal space. so let 'em smoke. its not gonna make the hole any bigger.
