length times width...so if the room is 12x10...it's 12 x 10 =120 sq ft..

multiply the length of the room by the width of the room- a 12 by 12 room would be 144 square feet. If you need to do this for carpeting, divide the square footage by 9. that will tell you how many yards you will need.

You could use a string and cut it off as you go around the room and put tape and label on the longitude and latitude of the room

If you don't have a measuring tape and your only looking for approximate anyway, then just pace it off estimating that your foot is probably about 1 foot.
