It went out the window along with abstinence & chivalry. It does really suck how the world has changed. The big problem is that not a lot of people see or people don't see it as a big deal. I say everyone should smile ... it's universal and contagious.

Manners? I think people forgot that the porthole in their face could also be used for kindness and not just spitting, cursing and yelling. Seriously, there's no reason why we shouldn't question where the "niceness" has gone, but doesn't it begin with the parents?
I strongly believe that parents, over the years, have gotten a lot softer on their kids. Not only on how their kids treat other people, but the parents themselves!!! So, the kid's mentality is, if he/she can treat Mom/Dad this way, what should make anyone else special?
I does start at home - no matter what anyone else wants to argue. Sure, some personality of the individual is involved, but that personality had help while it was shaping itself - growing up AT HOME.
Parents, discipline your kids to act right and bring respect and manners back into society.

Sorry I know the feeling people look at me in the stores sometimes weird for being polite like its so unusual think it has to do with the upbringing of todays and yesterdays youth in the late sixtys and early seventys I was a teachers pet because of well behavior and manners but got older then went to oilfeild there sure aint none there and now am retired medically broke neck and back but can still do it all and am happy for that just got to pay the price of pain now and that aint cheap. So that is only what I think. That and not enuff brotherly love or the 11th commandment.

You are treated the way you let people know you'll accept being treated. If you're referring to men and their manners, for example, let him know you expect the door opened by just standing beside the car until he comes over and opens it. After the relationship develops you can become for lax about this but if you let him know from the beginning that there at least a minimal amount of good manners that's expected you'll far better when you ask him to do something else or going to an affair that requires a different decorum.

It's become part of the popular culture to be rude. Sitcoms are full of people insulting each other. Children are not being taught respect, or how to treat others in a courteous manner. Adults are not being role models for those children. I'm hoping that this will change. I did teach my children to be polite. I have noticed that the ones that have been taught at home, are much more likely to continue their education, and are more successful in their careers.

Are you sure you don't see it? In the past we had about 3 billion people, we had shoot outs, women and children were not to be seen or were not allowed to talk. Think of the Westerns, but now we have 6 billion people. I truley believe that we haven't lost our manners, they are just hidden in a crowd. Did you know after a recent study that the nicest city in the nation is Manhattan?? If Manhattan can be nice, then we couldn't have lost our manners.

It is something that used to be taught at home, and with the breakdown of the family unit it just isn't important to people anymore. Families don't sit down together at the dinner table and discuss their day and talk as a family. That is where people learn manners, they learn to take turns, and share , and listen without interrupting.

I have found that most people never had any to begin with and its only getting worse. When someone has no manners they dont teach it to their kids and it goes downhill from there. I still have this 47 yr old women who works next to me and she still pops her gum like a school girl even when Ive asked her to stop. Its come down to me having to make her feel real classless very soon.

Manners were sold on eBay in 1986 to a young businesswoman in Japan with little fanfare or attention. Unable to store them all, manners have been finding their way into all facets of Japanese life.

As for us, we now miss what we once took for granted.

Rumor has it that the same Japanese lady also purchased "proper English", "proper attire", and "morality and respect for others" using the BUY RIGHT NOW button.

Oh, well...

It all starts with the parents If you instill manners, and respect into to children when they are young usually they tend to stick with it as they grow older..Some people just weren't taught any better period..But You know we can't change people, but We can pray for them and try to show them a better way to act..but that's all you can do..
