There are lotsa books on this and they do not all agre. People often do not understand themselves. Showing interest by asking questions that do not start with why can help also can make relationships harder if overdone. The trick is watching closely. There is a thing called a micro facial expression. These give away true feelings and motives. You have to train yourself to see these because our social training stops us from seeing them and they are called micro because they are very short like a flash from a camera. Notice obvious things like when a person hides their face, like by turning away. Get a book on body language and read it, can be very helpful. They are hiding something. Listen for exactly what people say which means also noticing what they did not say. Close observation is a good place to start. Reading your Bible helps cuz it gives many things about human behavior, as well as truths that come in handy about your own behavior. Prayer can help if you ask for un understanding heart, but beware understanding will tell you lotsa, lotsa stuff you would rather not know, cuz humane beings are sometimes even often not fun to understand, thats why people who have jobs that deal a lot with people have higher turn over times.
