Would I have to kill the grass that's already there?

Nope, but I think if you just want to put it in certain areas, I would somewhat digg out a spot, than put a level with sand, a level with gravel and than rock's on top of it.
I also would use border rocks arround it to form a bed. That's what I have done under my cherry tree.
I actually have squared up the ground there, put several levels of soil there, than planted it and one spot under the tree, I put peat gravel there. The borders I have formed with rocks that I already had there. Now it' looks pretty.

The best way is to layout where you want your rock. Use some rope, garden hose, string, etc to generally layout the bed. Then use some surveying paint to paint the layout on the grass. Then remove about a 6" wide edge along that line of the bed, inside edge towards the rock. Then kill the grass with RoundUp or something else that will permanently kill the grass. After a few weeks the grass will be dead and you can weedeat it down to nothing. You can also till it up alittle, but this is not necessary. Then put down your weed barriers, stakes, edging, and the rocks. That is basically how I would do it to insure no weeds and stuff. Also, make sure your beds are leveled out. No rocks or dirt clods and stuff.

You will have to remove the grass from the area that the rocks will go otherwise you will be weedeating in that area all of the time.

You can hope that a meteor hits your particular yard, thereby saving you time and money.

Or, you could donate the money you'd spend on the rocks to the Katrina victims because they probably need it more than your yard needs rocks. :)

Have a nice day!

if you're covering it completely, there would be nothing wrong with spraying the area with round-up.
