Condition is very important in establishing its value. The first edition of this novel was in 2 volumes, published in 1852 by John P. Jewett Co. in Boston. Are you sure that's what you have? If in very good condition, this could be worth $12,000 to $15,000.00.

If it's truly a first edition, then hold onto it. Another major determining factor though, in any book appraisal, is what condition the book it's self is in. Are there any missing or torn pages, water damage, spine damage or writing on and in it? All these things are factors that could bring the possible price down.
Still, I think it's great, that you found such a book. You should read it (a different copy, wouldn't want to possibly hurt the first edition) because the story is one not to be missed!
