Because there is a big, wide world outside of Iowa to see, and some of the young people know it.

As a former Iowan who now lives in San Francisco, the biggest problem for young Iowans is that the job prospects are pretty limited in Iowa. If you want a job in retail or agriculture, you can find employment, but if you want to find a technology, Internet, or marketing job, you are out of luck.

No doubt Iowa is a great place to live - you just need to find a job that you enjoy, that is the tough part.

Your question is one faced by many communities around the country at the moment. I'm assuming you mean people in the 21+ age range....alot of it has to do with opportunity. Young people often are quite zealous to chase their dreams, while those of us that are older, choose to kick back a little....perhaps looking at the problem in terms of "what group does our way of life attract" may be a better goal...but I digress, young people are an essential part of any community...perhaps programs that get them more involved in the lives of the people in the community is an option...maybe then they would be less likely to leave....but realistically, there is more opportunity in the city, and until communities have a way of leveling the playing field in that department, it will always be an issue.

I was born in Iowa in 1942, all my kids were born in Iowa. Not a one of us is there. The minute I retired from Collins in Cedar Rapids, I left.

My daughter left because all the way through college she had to work at minimum wage. And, in McAllen, Texas, starting pay for a teacher was around $5,000 higher than in Iowa. Note McAllen is considered a low paying part of the country for teachers. There are a lot of other Iowa teachers in the Rio Grande Valley.

My son was a genius admin. He types around 95 wpm and has absolutely brilliant technical skills. He was sent to Collins as a temp admin. He did a great job, but whenever they decided to hire him as a permanent, HR would toss him out and give the job to a white female (he is a Hispanic male).

Finally, he did some research on the Internet in his idle time and found a contract offer the company missed. He was working for a V.P. that week, and when he showed his boss, the company got a Two million dollar contract.

So, the VP said we gotta' get a good job for this young man. They put him in the legal department, working on certain paperwork that needs to be done before the company can do business with companies in other nations. At that time, it was taking around 8 months to process these new starts. He rewrote the work procedures, and within they were finishing them off in a week or two, thus increasing company revenues by millions.

So, finally, the V.P.s said we need to keep him, open this job for permanent hire, he makes too much money for the company. They opened the job, and HR refused to send his application in, saying he lacked five years of experience for the job he had been doing. The job went to a white female with no experience at all on that work, and he was tossed out in the street.

He filed a discrimination complaint and the ICRC ruled it was not discrimination to be rejected for a job he had been doing and whose procedures he had developed because he didn't have five years of experience.

At this time, the company changed temp company to another one, since Manpower continued to send qualified males to temp jobs. Oh, they said the problem was bad record keeping by Manpower, but that is not even possible in today's computerized age. We noted that the new company would not ever answer his applications, though the V.P.s themselves specifically requested him for hire in their offices.

He looked and looked for months for work. Finally, he left Iowa, swearing never to return again. As soon as he moved to Texas, he found work. Now, he is in medical school, and says he will NOT practice medicine in Iowa. Let me note that he had originally applied for med school in Des Moines and was rejected because he was perceived by THE STUDENTS WHO INTERVIEWED HIM (Say what?) for being a gunner, which is an ambitious student. Current students there had pierced ears, wore backwards baseball caps and sloppy cut off jeans to class, and talked a lot about their sex life and booze parties in front of supposedly serious applicants.

Iowa, though my native state, really sucks. I believe it is the only state in the Union to lose population between 1990 and 2000 census, if not it lost more than anyone else.

There is absolute discrimination in the few employers who have a lot of jobs against men.

And, thus women of intelligence who want to marry and have kids also have to leave the state.

Iowa has worked hard to drive its people away. Good job, idiots. And, you think you can do a song and dance routine at a job fair and convince them to stay? Har, har. As long as they can get better jobs at better pay elsewhere, they will keep leaving.

You like it, you can have it with my blessings. I don't even like to go back to visit my foster daughter, except that's where she lives so I have to.

bill Clinton has personality and air of secrecy, and had the further benefit of being a relative unknown. no individual realized back then the guy would finally end up to be a pervert. Hillary isn't even the slightest shadow of bill, has a caustic personality, and now has the further luggage of her notorious previous. She's the devil all of us understand...too properly.

Hold a public forum to address the needs of your young people. Listen and respond. Create opportunity.

If people want to leave, then the society itself has shown something's wrong which is making people leave. Let them leave, don't interfere in people's life!
