Apathy and lack of real information .

The independence of print and TV media disappeared in the media consolidations of the 1990s. Today a handful of large corporations own the traditional media. The wealth of these corporations consists of broadcast licenses, which the companies hold at the government's discretion. Newspapers are run by corporate executives, whose eyes are on advertising revenue and who shun contentious reporting. The result is that the traditional media are essentially echo chambers for government propaganda.

The Internet and the foreign news media accessible through the Internet are the sources of alternative information. Many Americans have not learned to use and to rely on the Internet for information.

Many Americans find the government's message much more reassuring than the actual facts. The government's message is: "America is virtuous. Virtuous America was attacked by evil terrorists. America is protecting itself by going to war and overthrowing regimes that sponsor or give shelter to terrorists, erecting in their place democracies loyal to America."

Sugarcoated propaganda doesn't present Americans with the emotional and mental stress associated with the hard facts.

In National Socialist Germany, by the time propaganda lost its grip, Germans were in the hands of a police state. It was too late to take corrective measures. Not even the military could correct the disastrous policies of the executive. In the end, Germany was destroyed. Does a similar fate await Americans? With recession about to hit its very possible .

As someone who spends a lot of time on political blogs, I can tell you that a vast number of Americans are very well informed. It doesn't take much to become informed. A few days of reading political blogs from the left and right wing will give anyone a good overview of the issues. From there, it's a short trip over to English language newspapers from around the world to see what other countries are saying about U.S. policies.

Once someone has done the research, they can have a pretty good idea of America's stance on foreign policy and of the world view of that policy.

Americans are no more or less ill informed than people in other countries. Every country has its share of voter apathy .

Nice stereotype, not all Americans are ill informed. Why are you such an @sshole? Obviously some Americans are informed, the majority of the country believes Bush has a terrible foreign policy.

Because most Americans could care less about anything beyond the trivial as long as they have the basic necessities of life.

Also, logic and reasoning is sold as a competing ideology to religion (as opposed to a complimentary ideology) leading to the rejection therof by religious Americans who believe it poses a challenge to their faith. Without use of fundamental logic, reasoning and relativism ideas like "bad guys and good guys" flourish, leading to a foreign policy whose foundation belongs in the Middle Ages. When all sides in a conflict hold such beliefs, it is impossible for the conflict to end because of the sides' inability to see it from a neutral, relative, outside observer perspective.

A more civilized society would hold itself to a higher standard than its enemy, thus objectively proving its righteousness and superiority (as opposed to the absolutist stance of brazenly declaring it).

Most Americans are dropouts. A very small percentage have completed their high school education. To them, America is 'world'. Not only that they would not only know the capital of their country leave aside their state. They play beach volleyball amongst themselves and call it 'world title competition.' Some of the more educated ones may have heard of 'London' and Switzerland, but ask them to point out on the map; they will be lost. The only class who knowledgable are the American Jews. They are the ones who are running USA. So badly are Americans under debt, that if today, the middle east and indians decides to withdraw their monies, every american would be on the street and 'White House' would be on sale.

well first, thats a stereotype but i get what you mean...but i think its not so much ill information as its a general lack of interest whats going on elsewhere so long they are comfortable. its human nature, isn't it. we notice american ill information more just cause they are a very significant powerhouse economically nd politically (much as we'd like to think otherwise)

Most of the news channels are controlled by government therefore relay incorrect information and their history books are blatantly inaccurate. They can only learn from what they have/are taught and if this is incorrect they are all screwed!

Because far too many people get their news from only one source -- whatever that source is, and they have stopped even questioning if that source is complete or accurate.
