Not really but there are more important things in life

On the surface, being materialistic seems OK so you like having nice things around you? you work hard for the money you use to buy these things right? but the only problem with this is when your liking of material objects supersedes other more important things like your friends and family and the relationships you have with them. The problem also is that these material objects can almost become part of your self identity and even your psyche which could be bad because what happens if they are taken away? you aren't just loosing a thing, you are loosing part of your self identity and there-in lies the danger .

absolutely not!

those that dont like materialistic people are generally ugly, have no friends or have no money.

whats wrong with wanting to enjoy the nice things in life? and who says what is a materialistic object? some would say owning a porche cayenne is materialistic, other, perhaps those less fortunate than us in the western world would say its materialistic to have a telephone at home.

The true meaning of materialistic is to place a desire for money and possessions before any ethical issues - so it is wrong. But the enjoyment of one's honestly earned belongings is fine. I have a huge collection of books, CD's, etc. and they certainly give me great pleasure - I feel that it is money well spent; I still own these, whilst if I'd spent it on drink or whatever I would have nothing (memories, I suppose).

Yes, cause we want more and more and more. I can live with what I have. I do not need to surround my self with materials, luxcerious items, a 3 million dollar home that I can't keep up, a motor boat that I don't know how to operate, things that I show off just to be seen with. Yuck, I 'd rather live with what I have and know that there are people in the 3. world that have absolutley nothing to live on....... Too much materialistics makes people unhappy......HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF GIVING $100.00 towards an individual in Africa? for them that equals into 7,000 kenian chillings. a salary that they can live happily from . I have!!!!!

It depends upon how much you let it rule your life. We all need a certain degree of comfort but greedy materialism can, in some people, become the be all and end all to the exclusion of everything else. The material urge needs to be tempered with the spiritual life, with empathy, and the development of the mind, too. You are then more likely to grow into a well rounded, balanced person who has appreciation of life's wholeness.

No, we are all materialistic to a certain degree.

Our BASIC needs are food / shelter & cloths (to keep warm), everything else is really just an extra.

The problem starts when we value possessions over friends / family.

(My wife would hold a different view - I am a collector of Sci-fi and she complains that it takes up money / time & space !!!!)

There is nothing wrong with being materialistic. What is wrong is allowing material things to rule our life.

It depends to what extent you are materialistic.
If it starts affecting others then it's not good.
I feel it's OK to have what you can afford and it's nice to have a few nice things.
But when corruption starts to creep in, in order to have these objects of desire, then it's you who has to live with it.

Not at all. Things can't hug you back or kiss your fears away though. I know what I prefer. I keep what I need and a few things I really want. The rest, I share.
