The distances are simply far too great. Our radio and TV signals have been drifting off into space but it will be hundreds of years before they are likely to be heard in the nearest systems.
Even at the speed of light a simple message to the nearest star system would take years.
There are suggestions that meteorites from Mars show possible traces of an early microbe form of life having lived there and having two meteorites with differing reasons for suspecting life does raise the stakes some what. The Mars mission at first suggested traces of a life form which was then discounted. Scientists reviewing the data now think it was wrong to do so!
With the trillions of suns out there, it is highly likely that there are millions of Earthlike planets that might support life. But planets do not have to be earthlike to support life. An early NASA craft was found to have microbe contamination on the outside of the craft. Investigation showed that it was Earth microbes that had gone into space on the craft and survived the vacuum and radiation in space to return healthy and thriving. Thus almost any planet might support some form of life.
It is thought, with some evidence, that comets carry much of the building blocks for creating life.
Given the mars indicators it is highly likely that evidence will be found that other life forms have existed on other planets but it seems likely this will have been a very primitaive form of life. But take heart if a primitive form of extraterrestrial life is found and we exist as a higher life form on Earth then the odds of there being many different extraterrestrial life forms out there would have to swing into an odds on bet.

Maybe it doesn't exist? (Though that'd make the universe an awful waste of space.)
Maybe we just look but do not see? Or maybe we look but cannot see? It could all just be a matter of scope and resolution.
Then again, what should we really be looking for? Perhaps it's also our perspective: that of a human. Maybe we should search outside the box and think a little more laterally. After all, what makes 'alien' isn't necessarily the same as what makes 'human'.

Perhaps because-
1. the distances are too vast to cross using convential means(rocket propulsion)
2. We aren't important enough to be considered yet
3. Or the E.T.s' have been coming for millenia to watch our development and not interfered, perhaps using a more sophisticated version of the Prime Directive from Startrek

Hmm why did they suddenly go from being green in the 40s and 50s to now in newer stories of them being the color gray? But I do think the government does a great job of covering up.

Because out there where the ETI live the time difference is too great to permit any interaction between us and them! Even though we are greatly accelerated in relation to them there is no way to create a convention that would work between two different cultures!

Who says that there is no real evidence?
The evidence may exist. If it does, various governments have 'classified' it and hidden it from the public.

Not yet. If they find it it probably isn't little green guys. It is more likely to be little clusters of microbe poop that no one will care about anyway.
