The best way to go about this is to research websites for thing syou are interested in ... hobbies, etc ... then find forums and/or chatrooms associated with those interests. Then you at least have a common bond going in with those you chat with.

As previous answerer said, be very careful. Don't believe people right off, let them prove themselves over time. If anything feels "off", don't chat with them anymore. Never give out your real name (always use a screen name), or you address, phone number or anything else.

If over time you get to know someone better and feel ready to exchange more personal information, then talk first with a trusted friend or advisor to see how it checks out with them. Always use a phone card for phone calls (real number isnt shown on caller ID), and always meet in a public place with a friend along with you.

Chatting in and of itself is a fantastic experience and way to get to know people, and most people are safe. But it is important to be cautious because of the minority of people who are not.

Be very careful. Don't believe everything they say. Don't give out any personal information. If they sound fishy, stop talking to them immediately.
