Is this a form of goverment subsidy? How many public housing units in America are there? If I understand it, I go to work, work hard, pay a full market rent which eats up my monthly income and then some of the money I pay to the goverment goes to pay for someone else's rent? I'm not sure if I'm correct in this assumption.

Everyone should be able to have clean, safe and affordable housing. Not everyone makes a decent wage and so may rely on public housing. Some places are geared to income and some are solely low rent. Many people think the poor should work harder or they are not trying hard enough. However many businesses and services we rely on everyday are dependent upon a low paying work force. Many people need more than one job to survive, never mind get ahead. Not everyone can be a professional but everyone should be able to expect dignity in the workplace and in their life.

you are correct, but some people cant afford full market rent. public housing is cheap housing for people who cant afford it. They offer lower rents to help to poverty stricken. No landlord wants to own housing like this because the profit margins would be so low that they wouldnt make any money. If we didnt have public housing we would have hundreds of thousands if not millions living on the streets. these housing projects are far from desireable, they just give the people shelter, they are by no means luxurious. I understand where you are coming from though, and i feel the same way sometimes but we need to remember that not everyone has the same advantages that we have.

Public housing is an absolute necessity for poor people IF it is properly utilized but isn't. Our government has ruined this program with all the immigrants that are brought into the states these days. The only way that this can be corrected is to get rid of the professional politicians and get people in office who will do something to correct the stupidity created by these profeessional politicians who have created this mess in the first place.

I ran into a separate problem as a senior citizen. I had hoped to move into a senior citizen complex (I am 71 years old). What I found was that these senior citizen housing areas are based on public housing itself. If your pension is over a certain amount you pay a much higher rate for the same housing some one else is getting who is getting a lower amount of pension falling under the amount set. I moved into and apartment building other then senior housing and after I moved in found that immigrants and welfare people are living in this same building under a subsidized program through the government. As I have signed a year lease I am now stuck paying full price for an apartment and am now living in sub-standard quarters having to put up with people who have no respect for their neighbors and are a bunch of pigs when it comes to picking up after themselves plus could care less about just about anything normal people do. My only hope now is to survive until my lease is up and hope to move into a small city that doesn't have the problems created by a bunch of idiot politicians who created this mess. I've come to the conclussion that the "Golden Years" come after you die.

Why does that piss you off soo much? Is it cause most of the people that live in public housing are black? I would say yes. You sound like some racist like a lot of other ******* in this country. You are stupid and so is your question. All it shows is your lack of knowledge and I can believe people sit here and answer this idiotic question.

I tell you what, I wish the public housing people would move into your neighborhood, then your dumb *** will be asking for public housing again. You racist are all the same.

I bet it pissis you off knowing that we send money to countries like Ethiopia so the kids can eat. You proable think they should get a job you sick ****!

Sounds about right. When you pay your taxes, you are helping to support others who for one reason or another, are unable to make a decent living. Granted, there are a lot of people who abuse this government assistance and they should not only be persecuted but they should be made to pay back ALL the money they have received - whether it be in rent subsidy, welfare cheques and/or food stamps. Everything they have gotten fraudulently should be repaid.

You have it exactly right. Government housing is just one more way for the slackers in this country to steal money from hard-working taxpayers.

And, the sob story about millions living on the streets was also told when welfare reform came around. The welfare rolls have decreased significantly, yet there has not been an increase in people living in poverty. In fact, it has DECREASED. "Child poverty rates declined from more than 20 percent in 1996 to 17.8 percent today. Roughly 1.6 million children were lifted out of poverty."
