as you can see from all of the other answer's it really is true , that it all depends on the company and the supervisor's who run the departments.
i have had many jobs where i have been late almost every single day two of which i have had for 6yrs each and i have had some jobs that only lasted a few months because of my tardiness in each case i was given the opportunity too quit rather than being terminated because some of my supervisors thought that i did excellent work or that i had the right attitude, and i just quit my job at "kimco manufacture and design "after a yr and !/2 because i received my second warning about my tardiness and so i left knowing that my third might be sooner than later.

There's no law on this topic. It really depends on how strict the company is. There are some companies out there that will fire you for one incidence, whereas some others will put up with anything.

Usually, it comes down to how much they like you. If you're an asset to the company you work for, and they like having you around, they'll be more forgiving. If you make your boss mad, or don't produce enough, they might be looking for a reason to fire you. In such a case, your attendance will most certainly be thoroughly scrutinized.

it would also depend on the reasons why they are late. Most companies have guidelines tha tspell out the policy but remember some reasons are valid and should be overlooked and not punished.

But the employee should not take advantage of a boss who is willing to work with them to get affairs in order.

The policies are set by each individual company, so there are no hard and fast rules. Such policies should always be discussed with new employees during their orientation to the company itself.

I think it depends on who you work for and if they have written rules of conduct.I think if you are late twice without reason,you may be reprimanded and if late again and again,welllll !!

Depends on the boss...

First time warning.....
Second time official reprimand....
Third time terminated....

None. And your surfing the internet on company time so you're fired. HR has been notified and is waiting for you so grab a box, pack up your few miserable belongings and head for the elevator.

Normally its three stirkes and you are out. But for me i have been late a great number of times and warning letters and still have my job. But being on time is important it shows how responsible you are. And you get your repects. So standard is three times late and someone takes your place.

At my job, there's an employee who had been late for 10 years now and still has her job. We all complain, but Boss never does anything about it.

So I gues it varies.

First occasion: Verbal warning.
Not late again for a month. cleared.
Second occasion in a month - second verbal warning.
Next time late - written warning.
Next time late - Formal written warning of possible dismissal.
Next time late - Another Formal warning or dismissal.
