Cost of trials and apeals: $ millions.

Cost of life in prison depends on the state. In the South maybe $10k a year; in Calif. over $30k and a countrywide average of maybe $20k. The Feds are the most expensive of all, imagine the cost of incarcerating Moussaoui or Ted Kaczynski in the Federal ADX Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado.

Death penalty costs more because of lawyer fees. I think some states grant an automatic appeal. Then an inmate can use the legal system to fight his case for like 20 some odd years before most appeals are exhausted.

Look at California...700 inmates on deathrow, automatic appeals, and under 5 people executed in 20 years. How many of those 700 do you think will die of natural causes after abusing our tax dollars for years and years on appeal?

If you don't kill 'em in 2 years, what's the bloody point?

life in prison is very expensive. If you look on the DOJ website it states what the cost is. That is for 3 hots and a cot. It doesn't take into account the payroll, medical benefits and other costs involved in keeping the person housed. Another estimate taking all this into account shows it costs about 75-83K a year for a healthy inmate is soars to over 100K for elderly or sick inmates.

To put then to death with lethal injection is about 5K

I would have to say that, all in all, I don't have exact figures, but keeping people alive for 30-50 years would be more overall....but I agree with the fact that a lot of money is spent on lawyers and things first also....I think a two year min for appeals,,,,a court the just hears appeals for death sentance cases and after that....kill'em...

I would think a couple of thousand dollars tops - for the expense of the Lawyers and Doctors present.

The saving? Elimination of scumbags from soceity, sweet revenge for the victim, reduced burden on the tax payer for providing prison provisions, no reoffences possible.

Seems to me the death penalty would be fairly cheap compared to supporting a criminal for life.

Take into consideration the housing, clothes, food, medical, etc, etc... the list goes on.

Not to mention all the BS legal fees.
