She was born in the USA in St. Matthews South Carolina on a farm to poverty stricken sharecroppers. Her father was William Kitt and her mother was Anna Mae Riley. Eartha and her sister Pearl were abandoned by their mother at a young age. They were in foster homes until 1936, when they moved to new york to live with an Aunt.

I like two of these answers... Oh... wait... they have no idea there is a difference between NATIONALITY and RACE.

Nationality means where on Earth are you FROM.

Just so you know, she was born in a town called North, South Carolina. So, she is American.

As for her race, her mother was African American and Cherokee, and her father was a White American.
