I had an epidural for my first delivery and it did not work since they gave it to me too late in the game. I am 36 weeks pregnant with my second and will have an epidural again if at all possible. I am not a fan of pain and have no intentions of being a martyr. And is it necessary? No. Only you will know if you cant stand the pain anymore. I read in last months Parents magazine that having an epidural can speed up your delivery since a woman who is relaxed will progress faster than one who is tense. I dont know of anyone who had any serious problems after an epidural.

I don't think there is any harmful effects the second time or more. But if you want to know, then ask your doctor. I did not have an epidural/drugs the second time, and the recovery was alot better. If I have a 3rd child, I will not take drugs for that one either. I found that I bounced back alot quicker without epidural. Good luck and congrats!

I can only say that the second time I had an epidural I was left with a spinal tap, which then had to be fixed with a blood patch, that was put in via another epidural. But the needle the used is smaller than the one used when you get the epidural during labor. It is also possible for you to get another spinal tap from this procedure.

The epidural hurt when they were putting it in, but not as bad as the labor pains, the epidural helped me sleep for a few hours, then when i woke up i was in pain. I tried pushing the button to put more of the medicine in the epidural, that didnt help, so they had to call the anethesiologist back in to give me a shot straight to my epidural, the epidural made my legs and feet feel numb. But quit working when it was just about time for me to push. Afterwards, when they pulled it out it didnt hurt, but 3 months after i can still feel where it was at, and i still have a ache, or pain in my back.

Well as with any type of anesthesia there are risks involved. The main problem with the epidural is that if you get it to early you will tired faster. You can't feel to push and that increases the risk of having a helped delivery (forceps/vacuum/csection). If you can't feel to push and you push at the wrong times you are doing nothing but tiring your self out and if you get to tired you may not be able to push.
Now my sister in law had the epidural with all five of her kids and with the fourth the epidural didn't work. They must have put it in wrong or something but it didn't work. It worked with all the others.
My best freind had the epidural with both of her children and loves it. She didn't ahve any complications at all.
As for me I am pregnant with my second child. I say I don't want it because I don't like the fact that I can't feel my legs or pee on my own. But last time I said no too and when I got there I was screaming for it. I didn't care I just wanted to be out of that pain. But I didn't have time to get it and I managed. I am saying the same thing this time. I don't want to have it but who knows I might just change my mind.

I have 3 kids. I only had an epidural for the first birth. I absolutely hate needles, so it was very hard for me to sit there during conractions and hold still for them to intentionally put a needle in me. I hated the feel of the medicine coldly tricking into my back. When it came time to push, I hurt so bad that I decided an epidural was pointless. I heard so many horror stories of back pain and complications due to incorrect insertion or inept doctors. So I figured I lucked out the first time and I was not going to press my luck! So I went natural for the next two and was much happier. It hurt, but I was happier since I didn't have to have yet another needle going into my body. On my fourth child, I'll go natural again. No way I'm letting another needle near my spine!

I had an epidural with my daughter. The only thing I didn't like about it was the fact that it was hard to feel to push, and so I pushed for 3 1/2 hours before a low forceps delivery. That was 11 years ago though. So, I would say get one, but be sure to discuss timing and dosage so that you can push effectively. Good luck!

I prayed my epidural would work with my first child and it didn't.I am terrified it won't work this time I am going to try though i am willing to take the risk to have an enjoyable birth instead of being so out of it with pain.I don't think there are any harmful side effects other than shaking a little.

I had an epidural and it was amazing...it hurt a little at first, but once it kicked in, it totally made labour more bearable...it seemed that once I delivered my baby, it wore off. I wouldn't do it any other way than with an epidural

I just had one earlier this month and it hurts a little while they are doing it, and I don't know about other women, but after I had mine my legs were painful, but just for a few minutes until the epidural kicked in and it was about 6 hours or so later when it wore off. I couldn't even feel the OB examine me.
