Swapping a mouse is easy. But do it with the PC off as you could crash the PC by unplugging the old mouse.
What kind to get? Everybody seems to have a different opion on that. I have an oversize Logitech with the buttons on the side. My wife uses a trackball. My one son as a little bit optical mouse that I am afraid I will crush if I try to use. My other son has wireless. My daughter has a touchpad instead of a mouse. So don't ask me which is best...
You want to find whatever is comfortable in your hand and works the best for you. Go to a Best Buy or somewhere that they have a lot of PCs set up, go down the line and "test drive" the different mice and see what fits you. Then buy one.

I have a fellows USB mouse. Plug it in, stick the disk in, it works. Took 2 mins.
Just decide if you want a PS2 or USB mouse.

Unplug the old one, plug in the new one. Load up the driver disk and away you go.
