dreamer, Tony, and pig: Obviously, none of you even begins to know an answer. You're just prejudiced against Vietnam. So, if there are any INTELLIGENT PEOPLE, who perhaps have even traveled in Southeast Asia, I will appreciate your POSITIVE travel suggestions.

Adding to Otter's answer:

Ha Noi...

Huan Kiem Lake - What many consider the center of Ha Noi. Lots of stuff happening all around the lake. The Southeast side is where the mall is at, and will blow your mind that something like that is in a communist country. The Water puppet theatre is on the West side of the lake near the old quarter.

The Old Quarter - Houses and shops that are hundreds of years old. All kinds of stuff to buy, drink and eat.

West Lake - A cool place to go to have dinner cruises and/or dinner with a lake view.

Ha Long Bay...
Cat Ba Island is a nice island resort town. It lacks night life, but it is a beautiful place to spend a day.

Vien - Near to the assumed home and birthplace of Ho Chi Minh. Very communist, and very narrow minded people. Don't even think about saying anything remotely negative about Ho while inVien, or you might end up in prison.

Hue - The Nguyen Emperor temples are incredible sights. Take a boat ride on the Perfume River and listen to folk songs sung by beautiful Hue women dressed in ao dai.

Da Nang - Beach, beach beach.

Nha Trang - Beach, beach beach (better than Da Nang)

Hoi An - Ancient village with architecture inspired by Chinese, Japanese and French.

Da Lat - Haven't been there yet, but I heard it's pretty cool.

Saigon - Where do you start? This is a ver modern city will all the amenities of any popular Asian city. Eat at Pho 2000, where Bill Clinton ate. Go to the zoo. See the war museum. Take a dinner cruise on the Saigon River.

Cu Chi Tunnels - Everyone else who has been there will say it is an interesting place to visit. Personally, I thought it sucked.

Can Gio - Mangrove jungle habitat preserve. There is a preserve for monkeys where you walk along with hundreds of monkeys and feed them. The crokc preserve is there too, where you can get real close to them. Take a boat ride to a Viet Cong jungle camp, which I thought to be more interesting thatg the Cu Chi tunnels.

really quick answer (there's so much to see in Vietnam):

In the North :
Hanoi : fantastic atmosphere, little shops everywhere, people about at all hours, really good to soak up Asian atmosphere
Sapa (near the Chinese border) : beautiful terraced rice paddies on the mountain slopes
Ha Long bay : the famous one with thousands of tall steep mountains rising out of the sea. Hire a junk and spend the night on the water, excellent

In the middle part :
Hoi An is a nice looking town, every shop seems to be either a clothes manufacturer (go in and see the silk worm chrysalises being "de-silked"), or an art shop. Well worth spending 2-3 days

In the south:
Saigon is quite dissappointing (too "weternised, it could ba anywhere)
But the Mekong delta is very good : go to Cantho and visit the floating market
