A friend of mine said that what attracted her to her future husband initially was his height, looks and physique, and that he seemed to her to be the ideal procreating mate. After marrying him she discovered that they had very little in common and she subsequently divorced him. She did have a good-looking and athletic son as a result of the union. Now she wants to find a more intellectually compatible companion. it seems as if her initial choice was governed by hormones alone, which looks like it's all to do with subconscious evolutionary drives. Is that the case?

The answer is this.

During certain times of the month it has been proven that close to ovulation the woman subconciously looks for a male with strong features such as shoulders, jaw line and hips. Just after ovulation the woman subconciously wants a man who is sensitive, caring and a good provider. During menstration she wants a man with a fork in his eye, doused in pertol and burnt alive!

Hope this helps

you are right that a lot of attraction is down to evolutionary drives e.g. men are atrracted to young women with curves because it indicates that they will be fertile and able to conceive and nurse his child etc.

women in a similar way are attracted to:

strong (indicated by muscular) man because it indicates that he will be able to protect her and her children from possile attack. strength also indicates health and indirectly fertility in teh man i.e. he can reproduce

tall: I think this is to do with a daddy complex perhaps (my dad seemed very tall when I was young and this is perhaps what i seek know that i am older and taller myself)

but there is another thing to be considered here. it is not just the neanderthal type tall and muscular guy that women go for. we also like some level of emotional intelligence and caring. these are not typically neanderthal qualities, even though the above two are. these qualities are more associated with new age man but are qualities which women need from a man to support them in raising their children as well as to enjoy a relationship with that man.

there was some research done a couple of years ago which pointed out that the type of man a woman is attracted to varies from the point she is at in her menstrual cycle. that is to say that at some times (i think this is at the periods she is most fertile) she is attracted to teh neanderthal qualities i.e. tall, stong, muscular etc. at other times when she is least fertile or may have already been fertilised (apologies for the clinical crudity!) she is more attracted to a new age type man who she can bond with and feels supported by.

these qualities associated with neanderthal or new age man seems opposed to each other but any man reading this answer may well be able to relate to both of these 'types'. that is because men are usually rounded individuals rather than 2-dimenasional caricatures and the same can be said for women. we may be attracted to a particular individual but spending our lives with them is another matter.

I've heard women subconsciously choose the best mate to make there children have the best advantages both physically and mentally. Granted we look at some couples and think what went wrong there but the premise is still possible.

Everyone is first attracted by what they see. You may like man of a certain height and weight and you find yourself draw to men that fit into that format. But after you get to know that person and find out their qualities and values in life. Then you make a decision, if this is a relationship that you wish to pursue. Unfortunately, we as women make life changing decision on limited information.

Finding a mate is basically about the survival of the species. When a woman/man chooses his mate, of course he wants his offsprings to be from the best of both worlds. That's why many women choose tall and muscular men and for men to choose slim and sexy women.

Brain and brawn. Both are important. Woman like men of great physical prowess. They do get disillusioned if he is otherwise a dim wit. It has to be an optimal combination of both. The choice has nothing to with hormones. It is a good combination/optimal mix of all virtues that is desired.

My chap is 5"10 and apart from the slightly expanding belly is skinny. He also is going bald on top. That said he is the single most amazing person I have ever met and I consider myself privileged that a mth ago he became my husband.
Its all about the person I am when I'm with him!
