The first one was Endless Night by Agatha Christie.

The other, even odder, was a horror story that I just cannot recall the title of. It was the scariest thing I'd ever read. And it was a while ago so sorry to be so vague. There was a group of people, and scary, fatal things started happening to them. It got down to just 2 or so people left, and then it turned out that THE AUTHOR did it!

I sure wish I could find it again, although I suspect it wouldn't scare me any more.

The Coffin Dancer by Jeffery Deaver. Read that one on its own and then maybe the Bone Collector and perhaps the Empty Chair. After those three, the surprise stops being surprising so that even though you don't know exactly what it is you can sort of see where he's going. I don't like contemporary novels so much but the Coffin Dancer I lliked.

I'll freely admit to not being an avid reader.

But Stephen King's "Gerald's Game" has a nice twist at the end. Up till then it was mostly flashbacks and neurosis. And if you're reading that you should also read "Deloris Claiborne"...since they are sorta connected.

There are so many books that have a different kind of ending than you expect when reading the books that they are too numerous to name. However, for a movie, you might try THE GAME with Michael Douglas and Sean Penn.
