If he is a man and you are of the gender(s) that he will accept a sexual encounter with then he wants to be more than friends. He could probably want you more or less but the possibility exists none-the-less. You could certainly loose his friendship if you make an awkward attempt at romance You need to decide if you want him to be your friend or your lover. Sorry you don't get to choose both.

If he's not already involved, he wants you. If he is, he still wants you, but has found someone else to play with in the meantime.

You won't lose him as a friend if you make a move. That's a promise :)

(This is all assuming you are a girl. If you are a guy, things are more complicated. I can give you the full answer if you contact me.)

If you're attractive, then he's interested. That's just the way guys are.

As for the "I'm worried about ruining our friendship" bit, that never made any sense to me. Isn't the whole point of dating supposed to be to find someone to spend your life with? Shouldn't the person you spend your life with be your best friend as well as your lover? Wouldn't falling in love with a friend be the ideal that you should strive for? If it doesn't work out, and the friendship suffers, at least you'll know that you took the chance, instead of spending your life wondering "What if...?"

Ask him for a favor! (Not a sexual one) Like helping you clean you bathroom. If he does help, then it's not all about the sex. Then you could simply come out and ask him.
