How do I use a custom picture for my Yahoo! avatar rather than the face icon?

You need to create a Yahoo 360 account where you can store pictures. In your profile information for Yahoo Answers, you can check off to use a pic from Yahoo 360 and put whatever pic you want from there.

Even i had the problem earlier then i wrote to customer care where i learnt this

1. There are two ways to configure your picture:

- Click the "Messenger" menu in Messenger and select "Preferences."
Select the "Display Image" category and click the "Change Default"
button.

- Click the "Messenger" menu in Messenger and select "Change My Display
Image."

2. Select the "Share my picture" option and click the "Select a
Picture"
graphic. (You can change your picture by clicking the "Change" button
to
the right of your picture.)

3. Select a picture or use one of your own by clicking the "Browse"
button. (You can browse your hard drive for a picture. The picture must
be a (.bmp, .jpep, .png, or .gif).

4. Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window.

Please Note: Your display picture is automatically resized to 96 X 96
and center cropped. When uploading a picture to display, please make
sure that the file name has no commas, dashes, or periods. The picture
file should only contain words.)

For technical reasons, we have discontinued this option. Those members
that already had .gifs on their Profile prior to the change may still
have gifs displaying. This is why you may still see them showing on
other Profiles. Currently only jpeg images can be uploaded to the
Profile.


Here are some tips on converting your existing image to a .jpeg file
type:

1. Open the image in the program you use to view photographs.

2. Click the "File" menu and select "Save as".

3. In the "Format" or "Save as type" window located under the "File
name" window, select jpeg from the drop-down menu.
